.308 Win or .300 SM?

Depends on what you are doing and your idea of long range. For me .308 is the best starting point. Cheap, accurate and tons of info out there to read.

If your refering to the 300 WSM or Rem short mag then it really depends. Any magnum loaded to magnum vel isn't something you'll want to shoot alot, most of us anyway. .308 is better unless you have to really knock them out there. There's better than WSM if your stepping up from .308. How about something a bit gentler than .308, .223 can perform as well.

After "wasting" one summer shooting 270 WSM, I can assure you that 300 WSM is way superior to 308 Win but you should never get one as your first rifle!

Simply get a 308 Win or, even better, a 1-7" barrel twist 223 Rem and master the basic. Once you've covered the basics, you can then decide if you really need something "better".

Most big boomers are simply not fun to shoot because of high recoil and higher costs.
