hey fellas backin up on the 7mm08 AI thread, I have also a 308 Barrel for the Kimber, Wondering if there is something a bit more powerful that I could Rechamber the 308 barrel into?

is AI worth in this Cartridge?

yeah gatehouse, I know what yer sayin.

but then my little Kimber can be close to a 3006 performance?? any advantage I see is a gain?

theres possibly a fella I know who will fit the barrel for minimal cost. without the rechamber. if I was just to screw the 308 on.


I duno what ta doo

sharper shoulder, maybe few extra FPS and extendad case life sounds good though

Don't know to AI the 708 or the 308, to the point I don't know if I want to run the 708 or the 308 to begin with!!!!

The .30/284 will give you basically .30/06 ballistics, and I have a Hodgdon manual on the shelf that uses the same data for both. The smaller bore 7mm will give you better velocities when comparing bullets of similar sectional densities. I would rather fire a 150 gr. bullet out of a 7-08 than a .308, because you will have higher sectional density ( theoretically better penetration ) and generally higher b.c.
 
The thing with AI conversions is that they add a fairly small increase in powder capacity. People get great velocities with them mostly because they load them to higher pressures than the standard versions.

But whatever....It's 2016. We have powders now that can make a .308 perform pretty close or the same to traditional 30-06 velocities anyway. People have killed animals (and humans) with a .308 at much longer ranges than most of us hunt at. We have bullets that can do amazing things. You want a bullet to go stem to stern on a deer with a .308? Use a 130 150 gr TTSX. Want to shoot something long range? Use a LRNAB...Whatever you want, you can get there without AI
 
.30-.284 would get you what you are looking for. Or 7.5x55 Swiss, which is very similar.
Just make sure that the larger diameter of the rounds won't cause a feed problem.

That's what I was thinking - off the shelf brass and dies, even surplus ammo to shoot for plinking.

Given that he already has a 35Whelen, a 338Fed would be a bit redundant.

The problem with the 30/06 and 308, they do what they do so well, it's hard to improve on them. That's why so many one-gun owners use them and with good results while we fiddle and fart with so many niche chamberings. I have 8 different rifles right now I can use for deer hunting and every year keep going back to the same one.
