What’s everyone’s favourite/go to .308 win ammo?

I wanna hear the best of the best and the worst of the worst.

Gimme what you got!

For hunting purposes. Ive never tried the federal gold match but I’ve read good reviews.

I’ve tried Hornady and I know they are top quality. Hmmm

For hunting I've only used Browning BXR, seemed to work good but it has a steel case cartridge.

For target I prefer my own hand loads (Sierra, varget, cci primers, L.C brass) but if factory ammo, Hornady A-max loaded Match ammo is very good quality.

For plinking or for bringing friends to the range, I use American Eagle (L.C brass) bulk 7.62x51

Federal Premium Vital Shok 150 is a decent low priced ammunition for deer. Even the blue box Federal works great on deer.

For target shooting on the cheap, Sierra Match King 155 pushed by 46 grains of varget shoots well for me in a gun that doesn't have the twist rate to stabilize a much heavier bullet. It's certainly fine at 600 yards or less. I can't say how it does at greater distances. Might be a little light in the loading for 1000.

155's with 46 gr of Varget is about the standard load for TR shooters out to 1000 yards. Better 155's out there but the 155 SMK's work just fine.

.308 Winchester falls in that velocity range where most cup and core bullets give pretty decent performance.
Factory loads that I'd pick a 165 or 180 grain conventional hunting round for all around use, but a 150 that shot better would definitely need a sharp knife if steered into the important bits. Hornady 165 Whitetail is shooting as well or better than I can get my .308 to with my handloads.

I've moved to Barnes VOR-TX with the TTSX bullet for hunting / 150gr. lead free, crazy accurate, even a touch lighter recoil. Very satisfied.

Every gun shoots every bullet differently. Theres not really a point in comparing.
X2!!! I only shoot reloads and strictly hunting ammo since I'm long away from target shooting as a past time. A dead nuts accurate load out of my Mossberg Patriot .308 doesn't group worth a damn out of my Winchester Mod.100 semi, for instance, so I've tailored moose and deer loads out of every rifle I have. That said, the only way to find out what your particular rifle likes the most is to try different types of ammo and see what gives you the most satisfactory results.

Since the 1990's I have been using RL-15 and Speer 165 grain HotCor. Speer #14 and Nosler #7 both give loads at 2,800 fps. My Model 70 Winchester matches that data pretty much exactly using W-W cases and Fed 210 primers.

Hornady Superformance 150 grain SST is a favourite of mine. It is very accurate in my Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 and my Savage Model 12. I have one-shot-killed 3 deer with it over the last 5 years.
