Looking for any input you can offer in load development for this combo will try RL15, imr 3031, 4895, 4064, 4350, and Varget

would like to shoot either 165 gr Sierra BTSP, or 165gr Sierra HPBT, this will be used more for hunting than Competetive shooting.

also looking for 200 new Winchester 308 brass and 1lb of Varget (LOL)

any help would be appreciated thanks

Wouldn't a Sierra Game King be better for hunting than the 165 HPBT? I use 43gr Varget with Sierra 180gr Game King Spritzer.

You don't say where you are but there's another thread about Cabelas having some Varget in stock.

Don't use the above bullet!

4895 4064 and varget would be your best choices, I would avoid RL15 since its unobtanium and 4350 is too slow

Sierra has a hunting 165g HPBT as long as it's not the Match King things will be fine.

I like the Hornady 165bt in my 308's it will penetrate well and cause enough damage to take down deer sized or larger game with no problems. I use R15 (when I had some) but 4064 worked too, just not quite as accurate. Never did try Varget with this bullet in the 308 but it may be good too.

have used the Sierra 165 gr btsp for years and have had ok results the 165 gr Sierra HPBT is supposed to be tougher and better penetrating

thanks for the replies FYI Varget is available at Cabels Winnipeg and Higginsons

Use the IMR4064 with either bullet. Makes no difference which 165 you use as you load for the weight, not the bullet's construction.

sierra 165 gr HPBT is a hunting bullet suppose to be tougher and deeper penetrating than the 165 gr BTSP

has anyone checked the TR throat length?????

I shoot a Savage Model 11 Trophy Hunter in .308 winchester. I tried A lot of powders and all worked well!!! I finally settled on 42.5 gr of Benchmark under a 165gr Sierra Gameking(spbt), stuffed into Remington brass and a CCI BR2 to set it all off..I never Chrony the load but i should be around the 2650 2700fps area.. Groups with this rifle are under 1/2" at 100 and still under 1" at 200 if i do my part. Never had the opportunity to see how these bullets perform on the big ol moose but Mid Western Ontario Deer are all DIRT.

I found Benchmark was just really clean burning compared to the rest, that why i chose it,,, also with accuracy getting a NOD and metering to be effortless compared to VARGET

Just my 2 Cents..

For my 10TR, I shot some nice groups using Hornady Match 168g, 42.5g of IMR-4064, Winchester primers, mix of commercial federal ammo 1F out of the TR, and some Winchester ammo 1F out of the TR. All sized using the Lee collet Die. I seated the bullet at 2.80 and also at 2.970. Still some more testing to be done on bullet seating. I used the dowel method to check, and it came back 2.803, if memory serves.

Brass was hard for me to get bulk, so I shot some commercial ammo first to get the brass. I am thinking of getting some Lapua brass from Hirsch Precision.

I bought a Savage Model 11 Trophy Hunter Youth in 308 and have had pretty good luck accuracy wise also. Have hunted with the 165 gr Sierra BTSP in both 308 and 30-06 (short barreled also) and have found them to be pretty fragile going to try both 165 gr HPBT and SPBT for sccuracy and on game performance. My wife has shot three calf moose with the SPBT with good success but for Bull or Cow she shoots the 200 gr SPBT thanks for you info Jack

I use IMR 4895, Nosler 168gr Ballistic tip loaded at 40gn for mine. Best group was .466 MOA.

For hunting i'm using hornady 180 BTSP's and IMR 4064, with Fed 210 primers and winchester cases....from what 'm seeing here my load might be hot but I'm not getting any excessive pressure signs....my accuracy node with this combination is 45.2 grs-45.6grs. Haven't chronoed the load as my chrony meet with a untimely demise last fall and haven't replaced it yet. :(

I have done some work up on the same savage 10TR. For hunting loads I found the most accurate was 44.5 grn of Varget with CCI BR2 primers in just regular federal brass with Sierra Gameking 165Gr SBT. I had 4 rounds touching at 100 meters
