I'm just a pain and I'm not sorry for it. I know the savage 99s are an excellent rifle and so is the Winchester M94. I'm just wondering is the Winchester M88 in the same league of quality shooters as the other two rifles. If so should I try and buy one?

The 88 is basically a lever operated bolt gun, where the bolt rotates and the lugs lock into the front of the receiver. Has a detachable mag and a one piece stock.

I've had a couple of BLR's, a Win 88 and some Savage 99's in .308 Win. Of em all I personally prefer the Savage for fit.

But to answer the question in this thread the Win 88 in pre '64 form is a very nice, accurate rifle. Probably shouldn't have sold mine.

My first rifle was an 88 in 308. A very nice gun that I still have. I really liked the way it handled and shot a lot of game with it, including a B&C bear. The lever actuated bolt makes the 88 great for reloading, a little less stretch on the brass as compared to the 99. Jim Carmichael thought a lot of the 88 too.
At one point I owned every caliber made in the 88.

I have owned and shot Winchester 88s in every calibre that they were made in. I have owned and shot Savage 99s in 308, 300 and 250-3000 and I can say that the Savages, although being quality rifles could not match the Winchesters for accuracy. I currently use a 308 88 for moose hunting. As for the Browning BLR, it is muzzle light and does not fit me or feel good in my hands. The accuracy observation is fact but the other observations are just my opinions.

I agree for the most part about brownings poor fit not a gun I like holding plus the price is out of my budget. Also people want way to much on a used one the few I've seen your saving mostly just the taxes if that and they seem to forget that it's a used gun. I can't say I noticed the muzzle is light only held 2 and I didn't like them. So get an M88 if you can or get a 99C in .308. I'm still planning on getting a nice 30-30 and a .44 rem but I'm looking for a solid all round medium range hunting gun before I start getting a deer (30-30) gun and a play gun (.44 Rem Carbine) cheap to reload which I plan on doing ASAP so I save on money as both me and my brother have lots of time on our hands. That and the .44 Rem is just a cool short range stop anything in it's tracks gun and a good backup/survival gun for the same reason as above.

Well said RRC!!
I have owned all three, 88, 94 & 99. IMO the 88 is a much more attractive rifle and more of a bolt gun like mentioned previously. My 88 will shoot a clover leaf @100yds with 165gr handloads (42grs Varget). This is my go to gun with my 94 not too far behind.

You know, if Winchester (now owned by Browning) would consider bringing back a model, my vote would certainly go to the model 88. I could see it now in a stylish stock similar to the Mod 70 Featherweight with schnabel forend.:) I'd have the rear stock brought up and more inline with the center bore to make it better shooting with a scope.. What a great looking rifle and fine performer it would be!

That is what I always thought it was missing - a schnabel front end.
