I was going to reload for my M14 but I am getting some conflicting information. According to one book for the 165gr bullet I am using and IMR4895 it says the oal should be 2.65 and the other book says 2.80. Which is right. If it is supposed to be 2.8 what are the results of setting the bullets at 2.65. One book says the starting load it 37.5gr of IMR4895 and the other says 40.5gr

Neither unless the people that made the manual borrowed your gun to develop the loads.

Manuals give data found(usually averages too) on a specific day(weather, humidity, etc., all affect the data) using a specific firearm.
Use 2.80". That's been fine out of my real semi'd M14, using 150 and 168 grain bullets, for eons. You'll find IMR4064 gives more consistent accuracy too. Not that there's anything wrong with IMR4895.

Ok thanks. Will anything bad happen if I had some made at 2.65. I made up about 8 rounds before I noticed the difference in lenght from one source to another.

standard spec is 2.80. Some people like to seat a little longer. Nothing bad will happen at 2.65.

Huh? Really .. I seat my bullets to 2.800-2.810 (tolerances of the tip, as I have yet to buy a comparitor to measure from the o-give). I seated a few bullets to 2.795 and pulled the bullets because I wasn't sure what would happen.

Can someone give us the MOST extreme tolerances the OAL can be within safety limits?

PS-RePeTe's info is some of the best I can find out there ... its my own personal bible for the M14!
