Hello all,

Just checked my length to the lands using new Lapua brass and Sierra 168 HPBT. I get land marks up to 2.945. Too long? Remington 700P in 308 Winchester. Best I have gotten with this rifle is about 1.25 moa with Federal Match 168gn. Wanted to start reloading to improve this.

Question is what can I load 308 out to? Ya ya I got all the books and the longest I have seen recommended by a major manufacturer is 2.82. What have you guys experimented with?

Can this oal - to - lands be "fixed" or shortened? If so who can and for about how much? Shorten the barrel of take some off the reciever?

Thanks,

Your just fine the best accuracy I get with almost any caliber for target shooting is just kissing the lands,
i have a 700 action with a Hart custom barrel OAL just kissing lands 2.290
Lots a fellows say give bullet a jump of 10,000 take a look at lower groups with a jump,

If you don't need to mag load, try loading them about 10 thou into the lands and work back from there. I used to load 155 grain Scenars to 2.98 oal, when I didn't use the magazine.

Short answer is no. You.have to cut off some of the back of the barrel and re-ream it with a custom short throated reamer.

I have found that long throated 700P barrels shoot well with long seated bullets, and short seated bullets. Reloading is the key.

I don't have a magazine to contend with.

I intend to reload. That is why I checked for this dimension.

How much of a jump?

Wow that's long. I would have never thought you go this long without seeing a problem.

Anything I need to look out for if I load this long? Keep in mind I am new to reloading for rifle. I have actually never reloaded any rounds for rifle yet. I have loaded thousands of pistol rounds but never anything with a taper or this kind of pressure.

Thanks,
D

The only thing to worry about is that the bullet doesn't fall out of the case seated that far out. Every rifle is different so how much jump or how little jump isn't known unless you test. Some rifles may shoot better jammed into the lands and may shoot just as well .045" off the lands. But may shoot like crap between .005" to .040" off the lands.

Just like Maynard said.
