Which would be a better long-range caliber for punching paper over 500+ yards, .308 win. or .300 rem. ultra mag? I believe the .300 RUM has a faster velocity and is flatter shooting, but I also know that the .308 is used in sniper rifles, so it would have to be a pretty accurate round........ What do you guys think? The rifle in question would be a remington 700 police with 26" barrel.........

300 Ultra has an advantage for 500+ yard shooting due to its higher velocity and ability to make good use of 190+ gr. bullets.

On the other hand it burns double the powder the 308 does and has much MUCH shorter barrel life.

A 300 Win Mag might be a happy medium, if it is chambered in the desired rifle.

If punching paper, then the 6mm, 6.5 and 7mm are vastly superior ballistically in cartridges that don't burn out barrels quickly.

The RUM is superb where you need to deliver a lot of mass on target. Otherwise sort of like a supercharged big block in a Honda. What's the point?

If going with a factory rifle, the 243, 308, WM, 7RM, 260, 7-08, 280 are all much better.

Plus, you will not need a new shoulder...

Consider the 6BR, 6.5 Mystic or 6.5-284, 7-08/280/AI versions if building a rifle. They are just so wonderful to shoot at LR.

The only thing it has in common is the 308 diameter.
There 2 different animals. A 300 RUM is the same type of animal as the 30-378. Now you can compair apples to apples and as mentioned 500+ yards will shin, however in velocity not sure about accuracy.
The old 308s will hold there own at 500.
However you will remain sonic velocities at over 1000 with the RUM.
You can alson shoot the 308 3-4 times more barrel life.

i shoot both and alluding to your original question,308 will do targets 500 yards plus, but out to a max of 800.the 300 rum will do close to double that.my 220 gn MK will be doing over 1900 fps at 1000 yards and should not be doing subsonic transition till close to 1800 yards(1400 fps @1500yds)300 rum is alot of case and powder but if you need to go that far out,its just the payoff.

26 inch barrel, just under 3200 fps,i will have to review my exact load data but its over 93 grains H1000 IRC.there are some guys down south suposedly doing 3400 fps -+.the flying pencil has a BC of .655 but the lost river j40 with a 200 grain with a .797 will probably do way better, but i have not worked a load.some are dubious of the BC claim so i wont know until i try.i think they advertise a 220 j40 with a BC of .93,but my 1 in 10 wont stabilise this flying pool stick.my starting load was 91.5 H1000 giving a chronoed 3100 fps (30 fps variation)with the 220 JHPBT MK

Case life and barrel life are expected to be short for both the .300 Ultra and the .30-378 because of the high velocity and the great amount of powder burned per shot. Recoil is severe, particularly in the relatively lightweight factory rifles often chambered for these cartridges.
