Hey Moose565, have a look at a ballistics table, anything with 1000 ft lbs of energy on target is fine. The 308 is a good choice.

He is new so lets give him a break. I have seen with my very own eyes moose killed with a .308 Winchester and even smaller cartridges yet.
Use a good bullet (Hornady Interlock or bond, Nosler Partition/Accubond, Barnes X, Swift, etc) of 165gr or larger. Do not shoot farther than your capabilities allow, and hit him just behind the shoulder. Then get ready for lots of hard work, cause moose are big and weigh a lot.

The reason that people are moaning at you is this is a subject that has been rehashed about as many times as Sven Robinson has lisped. It has the interest of a ball of lint sitting on a snow pile in Churchill, Manitoba. Sorry for our sarcasm.

the top one is a .30-06 thread but everything still applies. without rehashing the old .308 vs .30-06 argument theyre pretty much the same except that the .30-06 can handle slightly heavier bullets.

It'll do fine on moose and bear with appropriate bullets, although it might not be enough for moose or bear that have been doped up on steroids, bad acid, and crack, and have been made to instinctively loathe humans by being strapped into barber chairs and forced to watch Eminem videos with their eyelids clipped open while being subjected to electrical shocks.

You meet one of those, you'll probably want a .600 Overkill.

I shot a moose with a 308 win using 165 grain bullets,it went about 5 feet and died.Lots of lung damage.308 win wont kick you silly with recoil either.

Yes, the .308 is way too large, the .223WSSM is a much bette choice.

The 22 Hornet necked down to .177 is all you need for moose,that .308 thingie is way too big..........overkill.

I'd only buy a .308 in a short action gun. Otherwise, I'd use a .30-06.
