30cal armor piercing accuracy

"Any cartridge that is capable of being discharged from a commonly-available semi- automatic handgun or revolver and that is manufactured or assembled with a projectile that is designed, manufactured or altered so as to be capable of penetrating body armour, including KTW, THV and 5.7X28 mm P-90 cartridges."

The above is only for handguns.

Although, I vaguely recall there being something about AP rounds in the explosives act IIRC

Pulled bullets can be found. You can always buy a case of 7.62x54r and pull the bullets. They're not AP, but they are Copper-washed, steel-jacketed, steel core ammo. They punch nice holes when fired from my .303.

Double, triple and quadruple on the bolded part. For the purposes of soft body armor (the kind Cops wear, and who the law is meant to protect) ALL FMJ rifle projectiles are "armor piercing".

AP projectiles are prohib , can't have em , can't reload em , can't buy em.

The only one who should be locked out of this thread is YOU! For spreading and repeating a line of bull pucky. There is nothing at all illegal about AP rifle bullets.

What kind of accuracy are guys getting when shooting 30cal AP rounds? And whee can you buy AP projectiles for reloading?

You will find that AP bullets are less than accurate. This is due to the steel penetrator inside, which is rarely all that consistent.

I'm not going to try to unpeel the onion of opinions on legalities. I always believed RIFLE bullets were OK, just the exotics like Armour Piercing Incendiary (API) were controversial.

US M2 AP is 166gr, which is heavier US M2 ball (ie FMJ) is 152gr (as per table in Cartridges of the World, 9th Ed. p480-481). The same can be said for AP vs tracer, which actually loses weight as the tracer burns. If you read Hathcock's sniper stories (IIRC), he liked AP because it had better long range ballistics.

My (limited) experience with black-tip AP rounds was that there was, well, a lot lacking in accuracy.

These were M2 AP, pulled, and loaded into a .308 case instead of a .30-06.

I seem to recall about 6" groups out of a rifle that printed in the 1-1.2 MOA range at 100 meters.

Brilliant!!!
Have you ever considered researching anything before you spout off your opinion.
Explain PMC X-TAC LAP Green Tip ammo which is available at most decent firearms retailers. LAP stands for Light Armour Piercing (says it right on the box).

IBTL?
Why would a thread get lock because a guy asks an honest question about a perfectly legal item?

I'd like to find some projectiles as well. .224, .308, and .338 please.
I could trade for some 145gr 30-06 M25 tracer pulls which glow orange/red out past 1000yds and are actually not bad for accuracy over Varget.

I have a box of surplus 7.62 166 gr. AP ammo and some pulled bullets sitting here for a rainy day..............but I am not going to run them through my match barrel to see what they shoot like....... ;)

Yeah, armour piercing rounds in a handgun would be a bad idea.

Any rifle with energy beyond a 5.56 NATO round at 100 yards will pierce body armour (level 4 plates).

Companies are hard at work to improve armour and better stuff is coming out every year.

For me, I'll just be like Marty McFly in "Back to the Future" and hang some stove plate around my neck.
