.310 123gr bullets resized to .309 safe in 308s?

Yes they will be fine.

If they are cast they will be the exact size you want.

If they are jacketed then i wouldn't start on a max load but i wouldn't do that if it was sized to .308 either.

It will be fine as long as it drops into the chamber. Most any factory chamber will be 100% fine. If it set up for neck turning then it may be too tight

I'll second this comment.

The concern is neck clearance. If your chamber has less than about 3 thou clearance with 0.308" bullets, it's a no-go.

Take a fired full-strength cartridge shot in the gun in which you'll be using them and measure it and see how easily the 0.309" slips into it - it should fall in without any assistance. You can probably run it through a 0.308" sizer if it's too tight.

The bullet being squeezed an extra 2 thou in the barrel is not the concern - remember, it's already being forced through rifling than in about 4 thou deep on either side - this makes it a 5 thou reduction.

Well a few years ago when my balls were bigger than my brains I loaded up 50 or so 0.310 123 gr bullets in 308 and fired them out of my M305. I did not have a chrony back then but the groups were amazing. Dummied quite a few beavers on our property where they were flooding the trails and fields.

Now that I am older and slightly more wiser, I will take Andy's advise and check a fired casing. The M305 is long gone, ( I miss it), but I have some bolt guns I want to hang onto for longer.

Yes, the beavers are back.

I load pulled .310 steel core in my .308s all the time.
All the research I’ve done suggest it’s not an issue
Remember Ruger Mini-30s had .308 bores for years before switching to the proper .310 for 7.62x39

At one time, many years ago, Speer offered some match bullets for 30 caliber rifles in two diameters.
Either .308" or .309" since some rifles simply shot the oversized bullets better.
I have a bunch of 150 Grain Remington Cor-Lokt bullets that measure .3093" in diameter.
As has been noted, it is throat clearance that may give you trouble, not the .001 or .002 os bullets
themselves. Dave.
