.32 H.P.S. - never heard of this caliber?

It should be either a Marlin Model 1893 (or maybe a M.36?).

IIRC, .32 H.P.S. was Marlin's way of avoiding putting .32 Winchester Special on their guns.

If it was a .32-40 they would have spelled out as I did because it was originally a Ballard based cartridge just like .38-55

Although I think it was just the 1893's that had that marking.
