32 rim fire and steven tip up rifle

Hello!

As I do not own a antique firearm I have a question about using a .32 rim fire rifle. Would it be legal and/or possible to discharge a modern cartridge instead of the .32 rim fire in a Stevens tip-up rifle like the one seen for sale at p & s guns and militaria?

Could you make an adapter or insert legally?

Sorry, I know have I pm'ed people about this and i even think I have read this somewhere before. I just wanted some clarification...thanks everyone!

What caliber were you considering? If you converted it to .32 S&W centrefire, you would lose antique status and the rifle would have to be registered. Line it to .22rf, and the same would happen. There are little .32adapters which are reusable cases which you prime with an offset .22 short case, charge with powder, and seat a round ball with your thumb. Antique status is retained. Or, you can watch for .32rf ammunition. There are caliber conversion options which would retain antique status; any centrefire over .33 calibre, for example. The rifle could be rebored, and the firing pin converted to centrefire, but this would not be an inexpensive option. There is a limit on how powerful a cartridge you could use in a Stevens tip up.
 
It would make far more sense to make up some .32 rimfire shells that use green (mild) ramset shells for primers. You will also have to make a mold or a swage for heeled bullets.
Many but not all .32 rifires have firing pins large enough that a centrally located rimfire blank can be used as a primer. Make the rim about .010" too thin and have the blank sitting a similar amount proud.
On larger shells, you can position the rimfire primer off center and it will work fine. I recently made up 5 shells for a .57 rimfire rifle.

I think I will save up the money now for this rifle. I think it would make a very nice survival rifle, on par with my m6 scout but a bit more classy for the ladies:) ya know how it is:) lol just kidding.

Hi Kevin,
I've owened a an old 32 rf for 40 odd years. My Dad gave it to me when I was10 or 12 yrs old. An old rolling block similar to the Stevens you are asking about. A small rifle, what was refered to in the early part of the last century as a 'Boys Rifle' and they were also popular with trappers due to their light weight and simple/reliable design.(mine came from a trapper west of Sudbury,ont.)
The only problem with the gun, even 40 years ago was the availability and cost of ammunition....hard to find and expensive to shoot. Well a couple months ago I brought it to a local smith who's converted it to a 32 s&w long. I have a couple young boys and I think it'll make a fine gun to learn on and now I can readily get ammo, save the brass and reload for relativily cheap. I'm not concerned about its status as an antique...I learned to shoot with it, shot a deer, my sister a bear(through a screened window). My boys will learn to shoot with it and Ill be passing it on to them.....it's a member of the family! ;-)

Here's what I did to a .32 rimfire that had a budged barrel.
I had me tool %die buddy fit a spare barre from one of C.I.L.'s old prototype sporting class target rifles.
He had to bush thre firing pin and change the geometry, then built the rail for the very cool 1920's vintage Belding and Mull scope.

The barrel then got chambered in 22 K hornet!
It has very good accuracy minimum loads, and is a great plinker and beaver rifle!:cool:

Stevens .25rf.

Great to see those old Stevens and Remingtons being made use of again.:) I converted a Stevens .25rf. to .25acp. years ago and also have one that is now in .22mag. I am also working on a little Remington r/block .32rf. that will be a .32H&Rmagnum if i ever find a good barrel. .45-90 :D

Hello Kevinh, The .32 Harrington and Richardson Mag. has been around since about the mid 1980`s ??. It is to me the the .32 s&w long on steroids and is best hand loaded for rifles as the off the shelf stuff is quite puny out of the Marlin L/action. I would stick to mild factory loads in those old Remington rolling block take down boys rifles though. I will post here when i get a barrel and test it out. Regards .45-90.

And if you get caught on the US side of the border, the experience will be quite interesting.
There is a world of difference between Canadian import and US export requirements.
Check the stickies about import/export.

As far as pressure goes, these rifle actions are not anywhgere near strong!!:eek:
My 22KHornet is loaded right at minnimum, with a 40 grain bullet.
Anything more and you are flirting with disaster!!
I had this thing put together for shhort range beavers and for fun, not a 100 yard gopher gun!!
It will hit a bottle cap offhand at 50 yards however....

Your .22KH load is probably similar in performance to the old .22 Winchester Centrefire from which the Hornet was developed.
 
Yup, I keeep it pretty mild, but with the good jacketed bullets available these days, it is okay.
I thinnk it is about 22mag specs, can't remember exactly.

Excited about availability of .32 RF at US Gun Shows. I live in the Falls but have never ventured to one of their shows. Could you advise price and manufacturer of ammo?

With the new laws regarding "Homeland Security"
It is illegal for an American to sell a Canadian ammunition.
If you are found with ammunition in the States, they can sling your butt in jail for 2 years.
It contravenes CGN rules to discuss illegal activities.This is a cease and desist warning about bringing in ammuntion from the States.

Cdn. licence plates may be recorded in the parking lot at gunshows. Folks on this site have reported being stopped on the US side of the border as they are approaching the border. Violation of US export control laws is very serious.
