338-06 - 338-06 A Square

The rifles I have a, one is a custom M70 Winchester, Ruger#1 and one (no longer own) was a Weatherby Mk5, were so close that the same die set at the same OAL setting could be used for all three rifles.

IMHO, one of the best cartridges out there. I were restricted only one hunting rifle for big game, it would be the 338-06. Very efficient, easily made up with one pass through a sizer die and over the mandrel. Just make sure the cases are lubed well and the neck mandrel is tapered. Of course, new brass works best. They will need to be trimmed as the case necks are visibly shorter and uneven after forming.

The OKH trio (Oneil, Keith and Hopkins)really knew their stuff with that one. It should have been legitimised 75 years ago, rather than be left to languish as a wildcat. I've own at least one for 35 years and if I wasn't so enamored with the 6.5x55 right now would still be using it for all of my big game hunting.

The recoil from the cartridge is about the same as heavy bullets loaded into a 30-06.

There are several custom chambers for this cartridge. Some differ radically from the 338-06 A square. The basic chambering as the A square is just fine.

One caveat though, it can be an addicting round. It just performs so well that people who use it a lot, just don't bother to try anything else.

I once bought a Ruger #1 that was chambered in a wildcat called the 338Jordan. It was named after the fellows son. It was basically a 30-06 cartridge that was blown out to a 1/4 inch neck with a 60degree shoulder and a 1degree taper. That thing gave velocities that were around 50-100 fps slower than the 338 Win Mag, and kicked every bit as hard. I had the chamber area set back to accept a 308 cartridge and the dies ground off to make up the cases and installed the barrel on a 96 Mauser action. It was my version of the 338-08 but 20+ years ahead of its time. Not a big deal really because every wildcatter out there had put every bullet imaginable into a 308Win case at one time or another. Those were fun days.

If you're planning on getting one, just remember that you will be in good company.
Elmer Keith loved the cartridge and bullet combinations that went with it and used it as a primary cartridge in one rifle or another until he was to old and crippled to hunt anymore. Then of course, there were Oneil, Hopkins and Atkins to name a few others that truly loved it as well.

I' replying to an older thread here - but here goes my questions.

1. Can an original barrel from a Remington P-17 that has been sporterized be reamed out to the 338-06...?
2. Is the P-1917 action suitable for this caliber...?
3. Should a new barrel be used on this set-up...?
4. Is the Nosler Ammo head stamped with 338-06 on it...?

In advance - Thanks to those who have gone where I have yet to go...!

1. To chamber to a 338 06 requires a .338 barrel. Your p-17 is 30 caliber. You could have it bored out and rifled to .338 and chambered to 338-06. There may be 2 guys in Canada that do this?
2. It could be used but there are many better actions.
3. I would recommend a new barrel.
4. I don't know.
