I want to reload for my 338-06 and I have an excess of imr 4831. I would like to use this powder. Anyone have any experience with this combination? I am shooting a 210 grain Nosler Partion . on another note... My overall length is considerably shorter than the max listed in my book. I am at 3.256" ( .015 " jump to lands) . anyone foresee any problems with this length?. Max is 3.440". Thanks

Get a manual, surf the web, start low work up, watch for signs of high pressure, as discribed in your manual.

I somehow think that 4831 may be a bit on the slow side for said application, check your manual and cross reference with othe legitimate sources of data.

Best of luck,
Post a range report when you are done.

I've never loaded for the 338-06. . but agree with 56 gr as start. . Not sure if you'd get 56 gr. in the case as 56.5 gr of 4350 in the Nosler manual states 100% case fill. . Just finished loading up 5 boxes of 338 Win Mag and used IMR 4831. . Like you, I have quite a bit of it and wanted to use up some. . I used a Hornady 200 gr. sp and 73 gr. IMR 4831. . It was a tight fit with the powder right up to the shoulder and coming half way up the neck but the bullet sat in there real nice . . . .

i don't think 4831 would be ideal as its too slow. i currently use varget and have used imr 4350. none of my books show a load with 4831.

The ideal powder for 338-06 is " two grains faster than 4350 and four grains slower than 4064 ". N-550,Big Game and IMR-4007 slot about there. If you fill the case with 4831,it should go bang. However, I found IMR-4350 too slow, bullet went much too slow for my liking. Think of 2650 as max for a 225. I use Big Game and a Hornady 225SP. Got my elk with it.
