I have a Rem 700 30-06 DM model that I'm thinking of putting a new barrel on.

I've looked at the 338-06, 338 Hawk and figured I'd try to find some more info
on the 338-280ai.

Does anyone have any experience with it or where it sits relative (with the same bullet
weight) to a 338 WM or 325Wsm.

I believe it was Howell who first stuffed a .338 bullet into a 280Rem case.

I can't recall any info on AI, as the 280 is pretty much blown out to max anyways....

according to Howell, the 338/280 is only a couple hunnert feet behind the 338WM (or a bit less) and does so with about 75% powder IIRC...

I'd have to check, as I have his book and he does write a blurb about it.

There is such a thing as the .338-06 AI. It is listed in Cartridges of the World. I don't know where my copy is now. IIRC the 250gr bullet is ~2500fps whereas the .338 WM is 2650-2700fps.

Factory 280 cases are a little bit longer then factory 30-06 cases. In theory this gives you slightly more case capacity from the 338-280 AI over the 338-06 AI. But it's a very tiny increase, I doubt very much more then 30-50 fps, tops. If you want to get the most on cases based on 30-06 cases, look to the 338 Gibbs. If you want a case that is longer still, Howell or Hawk come to mind. - dan

Isn't the rough ratio - 4% capacity increase = 1% velocity increase?
