Has anybody tried opening up 300WSM brass to .338 calibre? The 338-06 performs so well that it makes me wonder how the 300WSM would do with the same change.

Edit - I see that Pac-Nor chambers for a 338-300WSM and Shilen lists a 338WSM in their chamberings. Does anybody have performance and load information for it?

Thanks,
Mark

would it be much different than a 325 wsm ?
i wonder why they don't make a 338 wsm or even a 35 wsm

I looked at this in the past, but the downfall is your mag box. If you're going to shoot a .338, you want to be using 210gr or heavier bullets. In most short actions, you only get 2.86" max in the mag box, which leaves you seating the heavier bullets deep enough in the case to rob your velocity.

If you go to a long action, you might as well shoot a .338WM or .338-06. If you use 200gr or lighter bullets, you might as well use a .300wsm. I went with the .338WM...

winchester tried it but found it couldn't compete with the 338wm for speed. it was consitanly at least a 100+ feet behind. the 8mm was a comprimise as they could reach there target velocity.

Biggest difference between the 8mm and .338 is that .338 has a much better selection of bullets available, some with very high BC (higher than the vast majority of other game bullets).

Are the mags truly limited to the 2.860" COL? That is the book COL for the 300WSM and I haven't seen a rifle that doesn't have extra room on the mag for longer lengths. If they can't be stretched another 0.100"-0.125" then that does limit the performance of the short mag with heavy bullets. I agree that if I have to use a long action, I would just go with the .338WM and not worry about it.

Remingtons are 2.86", but with the 700 you can do a little work and fit a Wyatts extended mag box, giving you over 3". The winchester 70 S/A and Sako SM actions are built around the wsm case, and allow out past 3" from the factory. Ruger S/A is around 2.92".

The mag limitations are likely one reason that Rem made the SAUM case shorter and Ruger brought out the RCM case as well, to fit there own actions...

In the end it is much easier, cheaper, and less frustrating to build a .338-06 or a .338WM, and have the same or better performance...

Thinking about both of those. From what I can find, the 338WM will be a bit stronger and the 338-06 a bit weaker than the 338-300WSM would be. I may end up with both, since it isn't possible to have too many guns.:D

Thanks for the info,
