I am in the final stages of deciding on a custom built rifle. I am interested in the .338-378 Weatherby Mag and a couple of the other big .338 calibers. I plan to use it for hunting here in North America and then in Africa (hopefully some day) and for long range precision shooting. What I am wondering is what receiver can I use, other than the obvious Weatherby receiver, to build this custom rifle from? Any comments would be most appreciated.

Wby, Enfield, Magnum Mauser (the real one, not a C or D, although I have seen one built on one of these), Ruger 77 Rigby sized action, Professional Hunter action from Montana Rifles, the Dakota as mentioned, a Ruger #1 or Dakota #10 if you like single shots, probably a few others I can't remember off the top of my head. - dan

All the actions mentioned above will work, I had a 338 Lapua built on a BRNO 602 this is basically the same case as the 338-378, any action suitable for the Lapua will work for your needs also. If you are open to suggestions take a look at the 338 Ultra Mag it will give you similar performance but will allow you to use other actions like the Winchester M70, Remington M700 and others suitable for the RUM cartridges. I have a Dakota and can tell you that if your budget allows you won't be disapointed with the quality.
