Is there any significant difference between the 338 cal 300 gr Sierra Match King and the 300 gr Berger Hybrid? I'm looking at working up some potential long range loads for the 338 Remington Ultra Mag....

The rifle in question is a Remington 700, factory barrel with a 1:10 twist.

Thanks.

Stan

The Sierra's G1 BC is 0.768(above 2300fps) and the berger hybrid's BC is 0.818
The Berger is more slippery but I have read that the bergers are very sensitive to seating depth. And if loaded to the lands, or close to it(reported as where they shoot the best), you may not fit them in your mag if that matters to you.
I don't own a 338 but I plan on building one soon and have been doing a lot of reading on the ballistics of the various 338 bullets.
Hope this helps a little.

VLD are sensitive to seat depth. The hybrids are less sensitive.

Biggest positive difference is BC. Negative is bullet length.

Most chambers are cut for using 225gr - 250gr bullets thus forcing you to seat the bullets quite deep into the case. If you do go this route, start your reloads on the lower end as pressure will go up dramatically.

I've ran both in my 338 lapua. The Berger produced the best groups during testing and the highest velocities but it took a lot more powder to get there. By the time I found a great load I was starting to see pressure signs. I've ended up loading the SMK's because they shoot very well loaded at mag length with less powder.

I am just in process of re-barrelling one of my 340 weatherby mag to #7 contour krieger with 1/10 twist.
Burnt the old one right out and wondering how short of a barrel would you 338LM guys want? I usually use 30" barrels but i am thinking of packing this one so thinking little shorter but still have not decided yet..

ATM i am thinking around 26-28" + Brake

Now to try both of them, I guess....
It might have to wait a bit, since my reloading space (garage) has been taken over by my muscle car for the winter....

From what I've researched Berger made (or makes) three different 300gr 338 bullets;
1) (gen. 1) 300 gr
2) tactical 300 gr.
3) hunting 300 gr.

All have the same .818 bc but all have different jacket thickness with the tactical being the thickest jacket.
