Help?

338 edge a.i.

Hey my buddy and I have had these for approx 4 years, I think it is a awesome round, do not waste your money on ackley improving it gives you no performance gain at all. My brother and another friend have 338 lapuas also awesome rounds but the edge is every bit as good . somewhere between 92 and 93 grains of h1000 with a 3000smk seems to work very well. I also will not waste my money on the nosler custom brass for this cartridge it just does not stand up in either of our guns. hope that helps

Juanvaldez, aka, North Shore Barrels, can do your upgrade.

We just finished my Savage 110 based 338 Edge. I am getting three rounds touching at 100 and at 200 yards a 3 round group of about 2 inches because I pulled one, the other two were touching.

We used a Shilen custom match barrel, XLR stock, Falcon Menace scope, Harris bipod, Timney trigger, and a custom muzzle break. I will be posting pictures of a couple of guns I have completed this year soon.

I can't help with firings per round as I only have 20 rounds down the barrel. I am using necked up 300 RUM brass.

I started with 85 grs of H1000 and the last trip I used 88 grs. I am going to 90 for the next trip.

I need to find a source of 300 SMKs that won't break the bank on shipping.

I also need to find some 300 grain hunting boolits.

Tbrwlf:
Did you use the .338 lapua 110BA, or the300win mag as your platform?
I plan on going to this cartridge at some point in my 110BA.

I used to live in Subury by the way.
I belonged to the Capreol gun Club for 5 years before moving out to Alberta.
I really enjoyed the people!

Asa:
How many rounds/firings are you getting with each case?

These are formed by expanding the 300Ultras neck to .338, correct?

We would get 2 -3 on the nosler stuff before the primer got loose. I beleive I have 5 loadings on some rem stuff. You are correct just neck size the 300 ultra to 338. I had 200 rounds of rem brass to work with i weight sorted by h2o volume and did all the prep work and have found the rem stuff to be fine. If someone would make high quality brass thats consistant and last I would try that. hope this helps also one more thing this just seems to be a inhertitantly accurate round, I have noy heard of anyone who could not get them to work, by the way my brother (lapua) and buddy with his edge have got out to 1830 yards I have not had a chance to shoot that far yet.

Right on!
You should be able to get past the 2000 mark.
The hard part is to find an area that has enough distance.

I have managed to hit my target at 1900 with my 300Win Mag. (2 rounds) fired.
I think I may have got lucky! Lol!

My 300WM has hit the 1760yard mark without a hitch.
I am thinking of rebarreling my 300WM, 110BA in the future to the ".338Edge"

I have a same plan pending for my 110BA, I think it would be an impressive platform to try it on.

I've had a couple .338 Edges, still have 1, a Defensive Edge Canyon Rifle. An Edge doesn't get much "Edgier" than that. (Thanks Hotshot:D) Mine's built on a Bat action with a 30" Hart. The big Bat action and long mag box eliminate the downsides of the Edge.

The concept of a "poormans Lapua" made more sense when there wasn't a .338 Ultra. As it stands, If I were starting with a Remington action today I would just go with the .338 Ultramag instead. You would have a fighting chance of useing your magazine, and the increase in case capacity isn't worth mentioning. If you do much for mods to the 700 action it can end up costing as much as a custom action. If you're going the custom route you may as well go with the Lapua and get the good brass.

I initially thought that going with the Edge chambering opened up one source of premium brass, that being the Nosler but that proved to be a disappointment. If you are stuck with Remington, you may as well use the Ultramag. Then there's the necking up. It is a simple run over a tapered expander ball but mine come out horrendously crooked. Sure they staighten right out on the first fireing, but the cost of fireforming negates any price advantage over the Lapua. I've got Sinclair expander mandrels comeing that may minimize the initial run-out error, but I can't help thinking that necking up a case and produceing an instant doughnut is the hard way to do things while not saveing anything.

Whatever you chose to do, throwing 300 grain bullets way out there is about as much fun as you stand.:D

Yep I would pretty much agree with what you said, but lately I have been thinking about a 338/408 or 375/408 just thinking which is where it all starts ,then becomes a slippery slope to here we go again

I have an edge ai built by ATRS, and I love the rifle. The edge is easy to load for, and can push some serious speed with the 300gr's. However if I was going to do it over again I would start with a good aftermarket action and go Lapua or larger. If your going to go kinda "big" you may as well go all the way.

I don't push my loads that hot, and I used 25 nosler brass to fire 350 rounds. I'd call that decent brass life. I found the primer pockets stretched on the first two loads, then they stabilize. The primers do go in easy, but I get no gas leakage and the primers don't just fall out so I keep using them. I guess if I was going to push for everything it has I could use some better brass, but my rifle likes right around 91-92gr H1000 behind the 300's so pressures don't seem to be an issue.
