Hey all. This winter ill likely be rebarreling a 308 to a 338fed. Wondering what the best contour would be. It will be in a mdt lss gen2 chassis so barrel channel clearence isnt an issue. Weight isnt much of a concern either. Im thinking 21" length. Also i was planning on a shilen prefit but open to other options if theres a canadian source that maybe a better quality.
Regular 338 twist rate i think will be fine or is it better to step up the twist? Ill be running bullets from 200 to 225gr. It will be cerokoted when finished so chrome moly or stainless doesnt matter to me

For me a .338 Federal would be a hunting rifle... and a fairly light rifle. No special twist is required. I would want the magazine to feed well.

I found advice that was much more helpful on the US sites and in speaking with IBI barrels.
I decided to go with 19", 1/9 twist for this caliber with primary bullet weights of 185 and 210gr.
This caliber is designed to shine inside 300 yards.

Well a 9 twist is really for heavier bullets but it will handle those light bullets too...

I suppose you raise a good point.
For my needs I don't see myself needing anything heavier than the 210 nosler p.
I want the ability to load down from 210gr so the 1:9 twist seemed appropriate for my needs.

curious to know what you would recommend for twist rate in this caliber and a 19 or 20inch barrel.

I think you would get slightly higher velocity with a 10 twist and it will still handle 250 grain bullets...

783 is the action. It will be a hunting rifle for deer and mostly black bear. Will be used from stand and still hunting or stalking berry patches. Shots under 250 yards. Ill stay with the 200 to 225gr bullets
