Hello
I got a 338 fed in a ts light. Love it. Bagged one nice moose and two whitetail last year. All with 200 gr SSTs. That being said the SSts werent exactly giving me groups that would lend confidence to a shot much over 150 yds. So I got me some barnes TTSXs, 185 grains. With the clip length I'm limited to 44 grains of H4895 which only makes for 2450 fps. QUESTION. At the velocities that will be slowed to by 100 and 150 yds will it open effectively?I want to stay hodgdon extruded to keep my broad range of hunting temps. I can get more umph with W748 but the velocities over a 30 degree temp range are going to have POI all over the place

From what I know about te TSX an stuff, is they like to be driven really hard for the calibre.. It wouldn't be my first choice in a 338Fed esp with the Velocities around 2400-2500fps.

mind you, it wouldn't be the worst choice you could make re: bullet choice.

One day I wouldn't mind a 338Fed.. Hope you enjoy yours.

WL

Edit**
I don't think 200m is an unreasonable range either, an 250 would be do- able consistently with practise

338 federal - 185ttsx and 8208 powder worked good for me - had to compress it a bit, but no issues. I think I was a grain under Hodg's max listing.
200 NAB worked good too - if you can find them.

The BC of a Barnes 185 is .352. 2450 fps @ muzzle = 2213 fps @ 100 yards = 2100fps @ 150 yards according to Hornady's ballistics calculator. Personally I would be looking at a lead core bullet with a higher BC. I think the 185 TSX would be great for a 338 WM in that 3000 fps range.

Some results one may not expect. My lowest yardage for a moose in NFLD was 35 and my highest, which I didn't need to take was 140. So I figured if I was shooting at 110 yds I was leaving a bit of meat on the bone. So out goes my old 6 gal gas cans. Those ols rough ones and moose hide I swear are the same material;) Full of water of course. 3 5/8" thick pine boards behind. It goes through the gas can sending it into the air a foot or so. Goes through one pine board and just stuck to the second. Final dia .561" weight of 184.4. I agree that this bullet was not exactly made for that speed, but just what in wrong with how that performed? Bullets on the pail if you can see it

Looks like you're set if you need to ever hunt a gas can. LOL

While I dont own a 338 Fed, it's been looking very appealing lately and maybe something I might need to "try" out.

I really like the big boomers, BUT . Having said that the thing is so non-recoil Your back to battery like a BAR in 243. I smacked three of them into that moose last year so fast and so accurate my guide thought I'd just shot once. I've owned pretty much em all now. I can tell You if I had to have a back up in near country it would not be the famed 350 mag, it would be this little peach hands down..

^NOTE. If theres ever an all out attack by gas cans we'll see who's laughing then;)
