338 Federal - Alive or Dead

The 338 and 35 cals have had a tough time catching on with the exception of the 338 win mag. 35 Whelan is great, but very limited offerings.

It's strange because there are so many popular cartridges that are nearly identical from 24 to 30 cal, basically a popular cartridge based on the 308/3006 case in jumps of as little as 7 thou.
But once you get over 30 cal nobody has any interest.

I think mostly the perception that the larger bores are prodigious kickers... which really is not the case, pretty much any shooter can handle the .338/.358/.375 group, particularly those built on the .308/.30-06/X57 cases.

I find the arguments for the 338 federal to be very compelling. I'm a 308 shooter, but hunting ranges in the woods rarely go beyond 100 yards so why not have some extra thump for not much more recoil? Also it's not a 30-06 so that's a plus Laugh2

You can see the 338 FED used for very large game like bison etc. You don't really see that level of performance in the plane jane .30-30, .270, .308, 30-06, 7mm Mag etc. The 338 FED is sold as a mild cartridge but it can go up to bison size game without it's capabilities being questioned.

Also reports say that the 160 TTSX loading in 338FED seems to be a very interesting!
