Doing some reading and thinking about trying this caliber. I’ve read all the posts on here about this ammo, most were old and negative... can’t find it, have to reload etc. But that info is all several years old.

I’m just wondering with the release of the Troy PAR in .338 Federal, has this ammo possibly had a surge in popularity?? I seems funny they’d release a new platform in an unpopular caliber.

Thoughts?

I changed my BCL102 over to
338 Federal from .308 Winchester. The ballistic coeffection on .338 federal is quite good. I think Troy did it because they were looking for a larger caliber based on a 308 Winchester case they also did a 243 and I believe a 7mm O8 in the US

its a great round but i think it will remain a hand loader round for quite some time. it would take a lot of interest for ammo maker to spool up for large runs that may or may not sell. besides reloading is fun and addictive.

I have a 338 federal and it's a great round, with 215 grain Sierra bt, I am getting almost 2800 ft./s with lever revolution powder, furthermore I have a hunting load that sends a 225 grain Nosler Accu bond at just over 2500 ft./s also with lever revolution powder, these are all standard loads available on Hogden site, no voodoo. At that velocity, it shoots as flat as a 308 with 165's and hits a whole lot harder, that amo would kill any game out of 400 yards in Canada. The federal 200 grain fusion load is commonly available and performs great in my rifle, should you decide not to handload you could also sell your empty brass casings on EE quite easily.

back when I was looking at a new tikka I was looking between 9.3 an 338 fed, in hindsight I should of went the 338 federal an reloaded 308 cases in it........ it holds plenty of power for what I want to do an isn't such a pig like the 9.3, close to 60gr of powder V about 45........... oh well.

Woodleigh make .338 federal projectiles which are rated to open a little lower than the 338 win mag projectiles.........

With savage bringing it out in many of their lines i think commercial ammo will become more available
I was very interested in this round for a while but between a 300wm and a 35 whelen i havent got one yet

Damn, I found that T3 338 fed online for $650 , that's a steal for a Tikka!
hard to find ammo here big time and the dies are fairly expensive too.
bit of a bugger iv jst set up with the 9.3 an reloading gear,, oh well

Try Ebay for the dies, some of the seller will ship world wide. Redding .338 Federal dies are on there for 45.00, that what I bought and they have an expander built in if you are using .308 winchester brass

Some stores have 338 Federal ammo on the shelf. It will just take some searching.
I bought all I came across with the 210 gr Nosler Partition load when I came across it. Shoots decently in my rebarrelled Winchester Model 88.
Pickeed up some cheap Fussion ammo, but have not yet tried it.
It is a great cartridge and would be more popular if offered in more platforms.
Shot a nice caribou bull with mine this fall.
