338 Federal

Is the 338 Federal just a .308 case necked up or are there other differences. Anybody shot the "new Federal"?

Pretty sure its "just" a 338-08. Factory quoted velocities are obtained by special procedures.

Just run the .308 case thru the .338Fed die and you're set.

I posted before about necking up W-W 308 brass to 338, they hold about 2.3 grains more water than 338 federal F-C brass. I will try both in my Sako

Did you measure volume by completely filling the empty with water...in which case the additional volume could be due to the increase in neck diameter...and not room which could be used when a bullet is seated? Or, is the shoulder of the .338 Federal "bumped" forward to provide for extra capacity?

it was a complete fill. You could be right, but I filled both cartridges with 46 grains of H4895 and "eyeballed" how high they fill the case, and the 308 W-W brass did not fill up as quick. Unscientific..I will try both when I get the rifle
