In a moment of weakness I brought a new M77 hawkeye home in 338 win mag. Wondering what I should feed the new pet. Dealer threw in a box of Barnes 225 triple shocks...so I'm going to try 70 grains of H4350 for a start. Any advice or 'pet' loads are always appreciated. I read somewhere that Nosler 210's are a good starting point. Plan is to mainly hunt moose and elk with this rifle.

I have a Win. M70 in 338 and generally use Nosler 210 Partitions over RL 19. I would be interested in trying some TSXs with my 338 someday because I've been really impressed with what my 270 WSM does with them. That being said, I've really had no reason to change from shooting Partitions out of it. I also shoot the 250 gr Partitions from time to time, but they have a bit more recoil. Your choice if the 225 TSX and H4350 is probably a good place to start.

The 250 grain Nosler Partition, Hornady SP, or Speer Grand Slam will do everything you ever ask of that rifle. If you want to stick to light for calibre bullets - under 225 in the 338 - you may as well have just bought a 300 magnum.

In my Ruger No.1, I've worked up to 72.0 gr. of IMR 4831 using Nosler 225gr.Accubonds for hunting and the same weight Hornady Interlocks for practice as they both shoot to the same P.O.I. This is my first use of the Accubonds for hunting (use Partitions & TSX's in my other hunting calibers) but I've yet to see how they perform other than on paper. That's the trouble when you have too many hunting calibers and only take one or two animals a year.!!

.338 Pet Load !!

This works best in my Rifle and I have made several one Shot kills on Moose Elk and Black Bear.

( Browning A bolt )

( 1 ) Remmington Nickle Plated Brass.
( 2 ) cci 250 Mag RIFLE PRIMERS
( 3 ) 71.5 GRAIN'S of Imr 4350
( 4 ) .225 Gr Nozzler Partition

I seat the bullets ** ( .010 " ) ** off the land's .:sniper:

225 tsx in the 338 will be pure poison on elk and moose, a real hammer. I would try H4350 or RL19 first. THey should shoot well. The 210 Nosler is a classic bullet for the 338, I would be confident shooting that load as well. Hard to go wrong with any bullet in the 338

thx for the feedback

Thanks fellows,

Good advice I'm sure. I got a hold of a Barnes reloading manual and it looks like I'm a couple grains over max at 70g of H4350. Speer book was real hot, I backed off 3-4 grains and thought I would be ok. Looks like I'll have to pull some bullets. I'd usually just shoot them off, but I'm a little chicken $#!^ with a new gun. I think 65 grains would be a good starting point.

Is your Barnes manual listing the TSX or the Barnes X bullet? They will have different data.

Email Barnes with your intentions and they'll gladly reply with the proper data. They said to start with the original X bullet data and back off a couple grains because the new TSX have less chamber pressure due to the "rings" on the bullet.
I'm switching from X to the TSX myself for this years hunt. And I've been reloading the 225 gr. behind 75 gr. of H4831SC (short cut) @ 2850 fps and with great results on moose and bears. The SC version gave me less powder crushing in the medium sized 338 casings.
Good luck.
