Next question to ask is what caliber your home range in templated for, if you plan to shoot at a range.

The 300 win mag will do a 1000 meters. the 300 is capable of taking anything we have to hunt in North america. Unless it is an I want item, you like recoil, if it has a muzzle break buy good ear protection. IMHO unless you are shooting long distance and reload your own ammo. It is pricey to shoot. Not that i wouldn't like to have one myself.

7mm WSM, or smaller. If you're spotting your own shots, smaller is better. The 7mm WSM is being discovered as a real killer 1k cartridge, and I believe it holds the current record. I'd also think long and hard about a 308 or better still a 7mm08 or 260, they'll all do 1k with a minumum of fuss

And while the 6.5-284 is good, IMHO the 284 alone is better - lobbing a 160-ish grain high BC bullet up in the .600 range at 2700fps or so would be just the ticket. And barrel life ought to be a lot better than the 6.5-284

I believe that barrel change is at approx 1000rds since the round is always a hot load.

Yes, but what caliber is your range templated for? The .338LM may over-shoot the danger area.

284 shooting 160 AMAX at 2700 isn't all that hot, max is around 2800 for the 284

The is 38 rounds of .338 LM on the EE ammo. At around $4 each ammo for a weekend match might get expensive.

my vote goes to the 300WM using costs and safety templates as a factor

IMHO, and from what I have heard/read.

the .338 is very good for 1 km.
the .300 is almost just as good.
the .308 is acceptable for most applications at 1 km

I personally would go with the .308 for cost, availability, and a wide selection of ammo.
If I can't afford trigger time on my rifle, what good is it?

This is just my opinion based on my situation and observations.
Your mileage may vary.

I actually moved towards the 338 WM. More so it packs the punch at 1km, but at the same time I don't think I'll ever shoot at anything more then a 100 yrds. Haven't yet For target , I have looked at the 338LM and it is an impressive cartridge

300WM gets my vote for now. If money was no object, and the wife didn't object, I'd go for a .338LM. However the 300 WM does it all for me right now.

I think 338 LM's much better for the shock and macho factors, but hey, that's just the puberty-driven-teenager side of me speaking.
