Simple question:

can a rem 700 action ( magnum one) can be worked to fit the 338 lapua mag cartridge? Can it be repeater???

let me know....

Phil

Remington are trying to do just that. It is not in production.

Personally I think it is a bad idea.

The best information on this common question can be found here

http://www.riflebarrels.com/articles/custom_actions/378_weatherby_remington_700_action.htm

BTW the 338Lapua has the case head size of the 378Wby, 416Rigby

Lilja is one of the foremost barrel makers around so they do know what they are talking about

Go with a Sako TRG-S ( if you can still find one ), CZ Safari ( about $1000), Weatherby MKV ( Synthetic in 30-378 can be had for $1350 ) are cost effective alternatives. Just toss / sell the barrel that comes with it

I cost is no issue go with a PGW .

Rem .338

Wait a minute Steve, what is wrong with putting a Big Black Chevy into a Honda? As long as you have a 12 point cage with 4 link set up, 33" tub and a shortened Ford 9" with with a good coil over set up, done by a very good chasis guy, that would be one hot little rod!;)

For simplicity, the 338RUM will do everything the Lapua advertises to do.

A 338-300RUM or my 338 Mystic will beat them both.

My guess is the delays is because the Rem has to go through a full meal deal development not just a bit of machining. Wouldn't surprise me if the action dimensions are made bigger just to make sure it stays together.

I would suspect this action would do dual duty as a tactical as well as a dangerous game action. Don't expect it to be in the same SPS price range either.

At those types of prices, I would go look for a SAKO or spend some more and get a full meal deal custom action.

Remington would have a winner if they would just copy what they have now and simply make a scaled up larger version of the 700 action and bolt to fit the big cases.

I'm liking what you're saying here. If they do go that route it'd be nice if they made it big enough to potentially house the .408 CheyTac case. Gives you plenty of other options as far as upgrading in the future.

Why re-work a 700 action when there are so many others out there that already do the .338 Lapua job so well?

Why? How about cost? Availability? Compatability with existing, readily available aftermarket accessories? The list goes on.

Agreed. My next project will likely be a .338 UM or .338-.300 UM. I'm going to put that on hold now to see if the .338 LM thing pans out with Remington first.

Cost!!!! Others are very nice and work well, but beyond the average person can afford with there hobby money.
