I did a search and did not find the answer. I am wanting to know what would be a good powder to try. I have read that people use h1000,rl22,rl25, and some other fancy powders. What do people here use that gives reasonably high velocity and good accuracy. I want to use a 300 gr bullet if possible but I do have a bunch of 250 smk's already that I can use. Looking for a powder that would be good for both or the 300 at the least.

Of note I will be using a savage with a 26" barrel and 1 in 9 twist.

Thanks.

I have had good results with Hodgdon H4831SC as well as H1000 shooting both 250 & 300 gr Sierra Match Kings. The 4831 yields slightly better results with the 300gr SMK's... at least for me they do.

Being cylindrical powders, I use the 4831SC (short cut) simply because it meters better than the regular long cut 4831.

You may have to select your bullets carefully as well: my SMK 's specify they are for 1:10 twist barrels which is what I have. Your 1:9 barrel may not shoot these well or..... it may shoot them fine for your particular application. Experimentation will tell for sure. Just something to consider.

Mine loves H1000 with berger 300gr hybrids and 300gr SMK's as well :)
Wanted to try Retumbo as well but it is becoming hard to find for reasonable prices around home right now and the bigger stores all seem to be sold out (insert wss rant here)

I'm using H1000 with 250gr Scenars. I can get ~3000 fps with a 26" barrel and still maintain good accuracy. The load I shoot most often is quite slower at 2915 fps and works very well out to 1760 yards.

I use 86.5gr's of IMR 7828. Great results with 250gr matchkings. Just picked up some berger 300gr hybrids from Jerry at Mystics. Cant wait to try them out and do a ladder test and some load development!

I went with H1000 due to better temperature insensativity. 90.0gr with 250gr SMK and the same load with 250gr Scenar. I use 99.0gr with the 300SMK. Accurracy is great with both. I have shot so far to only 674 measured yards showing approx. 1.1 moa.

What moosedude said. I just finished watching that video and that R33 looks to be a good one for large cases.

Only issue is that we likely won't see it for a few years up here. They always have to fill US orders first and then we might get some. I want to start shooting long before it arrives. When it does get here I will give it a try.

I think H50BMG and US869 would be to slow for shorter barrels. They might shoot fine but you probably wouldn't get optimum velocity. Just not enough tube to burn all that ultra slow powder.

That's what I thought you were getting at. You're working from a common fallacy, that the slower the powder, the longer the barrel you need. Fact is, the powder that provides the highest velocity in a long barrel will do the same in shorter barrels.

Hmm. That's something I'll have to try.
