338 lapua reload problem

So, you are using Redding dies, and an RCBS shell holder. What is the problem / question? I don't see any reason why there would automatically be a problem, should work fine.

what the problem

The brass is still useable, it will iron out when you shoot it.

When you are lubing, don't use too much, and no lube on the shoulder/ neck area. I like Lyman spray lube, no dented shoulders using that. I dented a few with RCBS lube. Be sure your dies are clean, just clean with the same stuff you clean your guns with.

I don't know about the redding dies but the RCBS dies have a hole through the shoulder area of the die that is designed to let the excess lube leak out so it doesn't dent the case. That hole can become plugged (sometimes just with dried up lube) so you have to ensure it is clear. A paperclip or small wire works fine. If that hole is plugged the brass will dent even if there isn't too much lube.

Absolutely NO reason to put any lube on the shoulder of a case. I lube necks [inside and out] with powdered graphite or Motor Mica and lightly lube the body with Imperial sizing wax. Never have dented shoulders this way. If you use a spray on lubricant, it is impossible not to lube the shoulder of a case, BTW. Regards, Eagleye

I use the RCBS case lube and lube pad. In theory this doesn't get any lube on the shoulder but in practice the round will push lube up the side of the die when you run it up. Excess lube collects on the side of the die after running a bunch of cases through and eventually gets scraped up to the shoulder area by the next case. When this happens I just pull out the decapping rod through the top and wipe around the inside of the die with a q-tip. Works great and hardly takes any time at all.
