I have had an urge lately to get into the 338 lapua game. I'm not sure why as I have no real use for one.
I'm thinking about downsizing my shotgun collection to pay for this so I'm lookin at the lower priced options which will allow me a lot more money for components so I can actually shoot it

Savage has several models and I have no issues with buying another savage rifle. Then there is the noreen ulr rifle which started this whole line of thinking. I originally wanted a small bore similar to their ulr single shot but they don't make such a beast.

What is everyone's thoughts on the savage line or other lower priced options in 338 lapua?

If i find I truly enjoy it and start making several trips up north just to shoot it ill likely invest in a higher priced rifle like the trg42 or AI but if the novelty wears off quick I won't be out much and won't be pissed I sold a bunch of fine shotguns for nothing

Well if you are serious about getting out to long range the .338LM is a great cartridge for the job. If you only intend to use it at 300m then your results may be better with other calibers.

I shot a $1400 Remington 700mlr that I modified the crap out of for 7 years before finally building a custom rig. It would average MOA with loving hand loads, but where smaller calibers would shoot smaller groups at short range, past 500m-700m in the wind is where this cartridge starts to dominate most other 30 cals.

You don't need expensive guns and scopes to make long shots, just consistent ones with the patience to tune them and use them.

Savage rifles do a great job and are easy to tweak as the need for higher performance grows. The least expensive way to get into a boomer (338LM and smaller)

When helping customers down this rabbit hole, a couple of considerations.. recoil and operating costs. A 338LM even with a muzzle brake is going to boot. Some may say, no problem.. others will go too much. If you have shot alot of Shotgun, the recoil will likely be manageable.

Running costs are higher then smaller cartridges. Lots of Lapuas parked in closets and safes cause the ammo cost has stopped useage. If that is not a problem... BWAAHAAAHAAAAAA.. happy to help with all sorts of goodies.

I throw out a caveat... if the goal is to shoot a boomer, the Lapua is a great option. If the goal is simply to be able to put a bullet on a target way out there, there are MANY better options out to 1000+yds.... the further you go, the narrower the options

Many of these options will also be mechanically more accurate to the Lapua so hit rates at extended distances will increase as well.

YMMV

I average 200-250 rounds of shotgun a week in warmer months 100 rounds thru the winter. I'm not recoil shy. I haven't met anyone else that shoots a 458 wm prone on bags with 400-500 gr bullets for fun.
I'm not a serious long range shooter. I do enjoy shooting a long ways with my 300wm. I'm just looking for a boomer to play with. Seems its the next step in the sickness and with the libs current anti gun advisory committee I can see many guns id like to own prohibited shortly so might as well get as many as I can now

Looking at component costs brass is more money than my 458wm. The lapua burns more powder but I buy in bulk. One less mag of 9mm and that equals out. Bullet prices are about equal
I put around 500 rounds a year thru my 458wm. I've shot my first batch of 100 300 wm brass to the point of risking head separation in only a few months. I do like the 300 wm
I just wanna have fun. Like anything else in life if it makes me happy even if only for A moment the cost is worth the experience

When I decided I wanted a .338 LM I bought a Savage 110 BA and had a blast. When I decided that, indeed, it was a cartridge I wanted to stick around with I bought a PGW Timberwolf and sold off the Savage. The .338 LM is a very cool cartridge to play with but it does get pricey very quickly and it you want to punch paper or steel out to 1K then there are lots of cheaper (and likely more accurate ) ways to do it but if budget isn't a huge concern then go for it and have fun YOLO.

Well, looks like you are a prime candidate for this boomer... pm or email if I can help.

Enjoy...

I have a Savage 110 FCP-HS Precision in 338 Lapua....great rifle for the price, I think they around the 2150.00 mark with our low dollar.

Stepping in to the 338 world eh? Hope you don't mind the 130$ for 20 rounds, best be a reloader.

I have a T Wolf, and I have zero problems with the recoil, and I'm only 125lbs, so pick a propper brake. I'd recommend a PGW, but you want a savage, so keep your eyes open on the EE, I see them quite a bit. It's a great system, nothing wrong with it, but most people just prefer something with... more... to it.

I've run a 338 for about 5 years, and unless your shooting 1k+, it's going to be a waste. If you just want a big boom, get a Deagle in 50AE, if you want long range, I would recommend a .260 REM build, but if your serious about reaching out and putting things down with impunity, then 338 is perfect! You may however want to widen your gaze, as there are fabulas options out there, for the coin that is!
