I was wondring if you could rechamber a 338 win to a 338 lapua if not what action can you use to do it. I seen the head dia. is bigger than a lot of the others(ultra, win)
Thanks

I suppose you could do-it as a single shot, depends on the action. I don't have a .338 Lapua round in my collection, otherwise I could check. anything is possible, but whatever BRNO they put the .416 Rigby in will do. P14 bolt faces can be opened-up tao accept .45-70 head dia. so check against that.

A 338WM barrel can be rechambered to a Lapua but hopefully, it is a good shooter cause that is alot of money to spend on a factory pipe.

The bolt face would have to be opened up and most modern actions can accomodate this change.

I bought a .338 LM Sako TRG-S (that`s the blued metal/synthetic stock hunting version of the TRG) that used to sell new for about $900 in the mid-90's. Put a WTB add on the exchange, you never know.

I have one of those Sako's. The Montana PH action will fit the Lapua, not sure about the others (I'll have to check my buddy's two and see what size they are, one of these days). P14's can be made to work, as can 700's (albeit somewhat thin in the bolt face). Basically, if it will fit a 416 Rigby or Weatherby (or the 30-378 or 338-378), it's a go. In the smaller actions consider the 338 Edge or RUM, which will equal the Lapua ballistically, if not with the same cachet. FWIW - dan

Ruger's M77 RSM will fit it as will the CZ550 Magnum action. Dakota makes a monster 76 action and there are reams of custom jobs that will accept the 338 Lapua chambering. You can even buy that big Remington MLR if you just have to have a Lapua. If you want to stay purely commercial and mainstream a 338 RUM might suit you better.

The other problem, aside from of all the other problems, is that most 338 Win are wearing 24" or 26" barrels. For a 338 Lapua you really need 28" to 30" to do the best job taking advantage of that big case.

I talk to friend about the lapua today he told me its hard to beat factory lapua loads with handloads.so he suggested some thing like a 338 edge. an action told fit it would not be as hard to find(custom or a used).I'm looking for something diffrent.

"he told me its hard to beat factory lapua loads with handloads"

Hard to beat how? Velocity, accuracy, shininess, what? Your friend is misinformed. Well crafted handloads can outdo factory offerings 99% of the time. I've chronographed a fair bit of 338 Lapua ammo, and it isn't hard to do better at all. - dan

I think he was talk about velocity.A fellow I work with said he can the same velocity using 89 grains of vihtavuori powder(not sure what kind).I will have to look in to it a bit more

In my rifle, I found the 250 gr bullet factory ammo from Lapua chrono'ed 2750 fps or so (from memory here), and my handloads push the same weight bullet safely to 2960 fps, from a 26" bbl. 300 gr bullets at 3000 fps, as reported in various magazines, are not possible in that length of barrel at sane pressures. But handloads are a lot quicker then the factory ammo I've used. Also, and for most of us this is at least as important, Lapua ammo (and components in this caliber) are expensive, handloading makes it possible to shoot more then a box of ammo per season. - dan

Brass is about $2 for each, single piece. A box of 100 will run you $200, at least the last time I bought Lapua brass that's what it was worth. Loaded ammo from Lapua was $160 for 20 rounds when I could find it (Italian Sporting Goods in Vancouver, again, remember this was at least 10-12 years ago), last loaded Lapua ammo in this caliber I saw was $120. This is not a cheap cartridge to shoot. Not as bad as 50 BMG, but way more money then regular rounds. 300 gr bullets aren't cheap either. I'm not trying to discourage you, but I want you to go in with your eyes wide open, so to speak. I enjoy shooting it, but if money is an issue, go 308 or 223. If you fancy 1000 meter shooting, one of the more efficient 6mm's or 6.5 mm's will do the same job. - dan

money is not as big of an issue a availabity. The other thing is the closest sporting good store is about 2hr away and it is not a big store.does the anealed lapua brass last longer then the other brass?

Buy your supplies from one of teh dealers on the board. Rick at ATRS does lots of business in teh 338 Lapua and can sort you out for components and Jerry (Mysticplayer) has the brass and bullets you'll need as well.
