"The resulting cartridge delivers astounding ballistics; driving the very efficient 200 grain FTX bullet at an amazing 2,565 fps from a 24" Marlin XLR. The bullet has a B.C. of .430 and matches 180 grain 30-06 ballistics in terms of energy and trajectory out to 400 yards. The 200 grain FTX is built tough and designed for hunting large game like elk, moose and bear but would be equally at home hunting whitetails. The 338 Marlin Express is the first ever long-range, big game levergun specific cartridge to hit the market, and opens a new class of hunting to the levergun."

Thoughts?

I'll take it for what it is. Tod and Blargon are possibly correct, the .338 Federal is a fine cartridge, as is the .358 Winchester. But what neither of those cartridges is, is available in a traditional Marlin or Winchester-style lever rifle. I hear the same thing about the .308 Marlin. I find it odd that people will find nitpicky differences between similarly-operated bolt rifles, but when a new cartridge comes out, suddenly the rifle action is inconsequential.

Most ammo makers bring out cartridges that can be used in multiple actions/platforms, not just forcing you to buy one particular rifle...Which is part why these rounds will never be popular. If you don't want a lever, you'll never own the marlin rounds..

the 338ME would make more sense if there was more bullet choices readily available other than the current one

of all the bullet weights that the .338 is capable of using, 200 is not exactly at the top of my list. 225, 250 come to mind as being more useful and having longer bodies. Just stating MY reason for overlooking this rifle as a possible contender for the gun locker. I'd just as soon have a big .30 cal bullet moving faster than a small for caliber 200 grain .338 bullet.
And what if the marlin you buy has a barrel that doesn't like the 200 grainer?? Not like you can try a different ammo.

Does that mean it won't be available in a 7600? ;)
