Has anybody heard of this cartridge? 2M Rifle Ranch in Alberta has this shooting a 250g Partition getting 2930 fps out of a 24" barrel. It looks like a 338 win mag improved. Just something to think about?

The machinist gunsmith that builds these used to work with me.He had lots of great things to say about them,never did see one shoot.I heard you get a free fries with every rifle purchase!!

Charley McDonalkd used to live in carvel, but has since moved his shop to Wildwood I believe.
A good friend of mine used to live down the road from him and has one of his 300McDonalds.
Thinks very highly of it.

Hey Guys:

Sounds like a nice cartridge on a long action, Maybe suited to a nice bush gun for Moose,elk,and Griz!!!

I am getting a rifle built as we speak on a Rem 700 chambered in the 8.6 x 72mm Swamp Domkey Magnum. It is a 8mm Rem Mag modified to get max case capacity. We are able to get 3150fps with 250 gr bullets in a 26" pipe and 3000fps + in a 24" barrel. Check out the web site at www.338wildcat.ca The site is still under construction!!!

I can't post the pics of the SDM but click on the "accuracy" link on the web sight www.338wildcat.ca and you will see the 5 rounds into a 3" disc at 600 yards @ 3000 fps +!!! I have shot the gun that produced theses groups and it is a 1/2 MOA gun!!!

I hunt with the fella' that shot a whitetail deer this past year at 952 yards with only one shot!!! The damn thing just works!!!

I agree that velocity isn't everything but when you have it, you can use it if you need/want, it is also easy to down load it to lower velocities if you want and still to duplicate other cartridges!! And still maintain the accuracy.

Well, I get 2940 fps with 250s in my 340 Wby, and 2960 with 250s in my 338 Lapua (26" barrels on both). The improved H&H cases (because that's what all of these various cases are), give you pretty much the same ballistics. I think to do faster speeds you have to be running at higher pressures, it would be interesting to see what kind of chamber pressures and bore/pressure spikes they're getting with this cartridge. Interesting data so far, though. - dan

Yea Dan, some guy's guns just defy the laws of Physics. :rolleyes:

Same amounts of the same powder will always deliver higher velocity in the smaller case due to the higher generated pressures - that's what "more efficient" means.

Larger cases will always have a higher potential velocity regardless of their shape, because they can pack more powder in, and more powder = more energy.

There's no way to:

- "improve" a 338 WM to match a 340 Weatherby;
- no way to improve a 340 Weatherby to match a 338 RUM;
- no way to improve a 338 RUM to match a 338 Lapua; and finally;
- no "improved" 338 Lapua can match a 338-378 Weatherby.

"Getting" more velocity in a smaller cartridge is easy. Getting more velocity in a smaller cartridge at the same pressure is impossible.

Dan,

Yes. Sadly, I am a reloading magic denier.

2930 fps for a 250 gr pill exceeds anything the much larger 338 RUM (110 grs water) can achieve at 62K psi. In the relatively puny 338 MacDonald (~95 grs water) and slightly larger 8mm SDM (105 grs) cases, they must be running in the range of 80K and 70K psi respectively!
