Anyone running a .338 RCM? I'm thinking it might be just the ticket for an eastern moose knocker. Probably a R700, with a 20" barrel, sitting in a mcmillan compact, fed from Hawkins hunter mags.

I am not running one yet but in the works of having one put together as my northern BC gun. I am running it off a Tikka T3X that is my 6.5 PRC rifle. so mags fit both with zero issue.

Factory ammo doesn't exist which I'm sure you're aware. An brass is easy/hard to find. When I started it was hard but it seems someone at hornady cleaned a shelf and a bunch showed up at different places. Dies I have found at Prophet River.

I am leaning towards a slightly shorter barrel myself but 20" is basically perfect from the research Ive done.

The hardest part is finding someone with the Reamers to cut the barrel. I am tempted to buy some as no one prefits for it that I have find in canada so far.

Other then that info sounds like you got it sorted out. Lyman 50th does have load data for it still.

ive posted some rcm stuff before, 2 of my Sambar huntin mates use the .338rcm - in aus its ruger m77 short barrel jobs.

one uses AR2206h and 225gr Woodleighppsn religiously. knocks em down- 90% of projies stay in them. 4 big petals.

i loaded other fellas with 180gr Woodleighs for flatter traj an i shot Sambar at 270 meters no fuss.

now days with superformance around, the Bro using 2206h can gain a few more fps ..sure, but he has never taken a shot on game over 300m an the 1 time i did see his attempt, its clear to see why hes a bush stalker an shoots 98% at under 100m lol

I have a 338 rcm, its a nicely balanced cartridge. Brass isnt as hard to get as you'd think but I stocked up anyways. I end up using my 350 rem mag all the time now with the 200 grain ttsx at 2950 fps.
But....If I was building a short action moose thumper I would go 35 sambar for the ease of always finding donor brass

yeah so realistic chrono velocity with the 2206h powder an 225gr was 2660fps or so from siv memory. in 18-20 inch barrel they have.

they got them for that handyness of those short barrel rugers, ... fairer call would be to go the actual .325 WSM...... so many more options. so much more ease. same an more thump

I love mine. It's in a left hand compact m77. So handy as a bush rifle for elk and moose. My favorite load is a 185 ttsx at 2950 and a 200gr fusion at 2850. They both shoot to very similar point of impact out to 300m. I can use the 2 loads interchangeably. It will be on my shoulder next week during our annual moose hunt.

I have been on the lookout for a lh Ruger in this cartridge for awhile, with no luck. (nice rifle savagelh!)
Would make a great bush gun for moose, bear and elk!

I have rebarreled a lh Sako Finnlight II to 338 Federal with a 22" Wilson carbon fiber barrel that is shooting very well. Have taken moose and caribou with it so far. Works well with the Federal blue box ammo 200gr Hot Cor bullets @ 2687 fps, and just under 1/2" groups.

Yeah I almost did the same thing for my tikka.

I only ever see the 375 rugers in LH for sale once in a while and thought about a rebarrel but cant justify the cost.

Just food for thought but if you move forward and plan on getting a smith to spin a barrel up for you let me know and maybe ill get one done at the same time to potentially get a lower cost because of the reamer costs.

Cheers,
B

was offered after a wtb a lh ruger 300 rcm but never been able to find brass so i let it go.

Absolutely love love love my Ruger Guide Gun in .338 RCM. I even use it for deer with BLC 2 and 180gn Accubonds loaded to 2900fps. Really versatile caliber in a short action, short handy package.

Another option for a short action 338 is a Sherman short mag, saum based. Mine shoots 210 Barnes ttsx at 2835 into close to the same hole out of a 22” barrel. I use proper headstamped brass made by ADG. I rented the reamer to build one a few years ago, not sure if he still does that.

I am in the process of building a Rem 600 (originally 308) in 338 fed with a Douglas barrel. Slowly collecting the parts. Have the donner gun, stock, scope/base/mounts and just waiting to get the barrel. Going to be my moose gun. Cant wait to start putting it all together.
I thought about a few different calibers but liked the 338

Great Choice building it in 338 FEDERAL ! How - Why did you decide to use a Douglas barrel blank for your build ? :d RJ

I've actually followed your build thread over on longrangehunting. The Sherman Short is definitly a contender as well, as I already have a couple of SAUMs, and a fair bit of brass. Who did your smithing?

I love it in its new configuration, just adding a dbm now to be done. Mitch Kendall in Kamloops, BC built it. I used a shortened 300 saum die to make my brass in the beginning.
