It seems like there is always room for one more in ye olde gun safe.
With that in mind I picked up a Ruger 77 in 338 Compact Mag.
Its a neat little rifle very similar in appearance to the 375 Alaskan and like it also has a 20" barrel.
The loaded rounds are about 308 length but somewhat fatter having been made by shortening 375 Ruger brass.
The rifle handles quite nicely and weighs 7 1/2 lbs. with a 1.5x5 Leupold on top.
With ammunition and dies on hand I'm now looking forward to some range time. There has been a lot of discussion on other forums with the concensus being that handloaders cannot duplicate the factory ballistics due to the fact that Hornady loads a "secret" powder which isn't available for sale.
But, who knows...time will tell...;)

With such a huge assortment of powders available to the handloader, I don't see why factory velocities can't be duplicated or at least come close. I have read lots of articles about this topic, and I wonder how accurate the claims are.

I guess you will find out soon enough!:)

I pulled a bullet out of curiosity and weighed the powder..63.6 gr. looks a bit strange not what I expected...tiny discs almost like flattened ball powder or maybe what Win 760 would look like if it were flattened.
It was easy to match that same amount in either RL22 or RL25 with room to spare, should have tried H4831sc and old H4831 but didn't.

Cool. Got any pics of the little beast?

Even if you can't beat or match .338WM velocities, who really cares? I'm sure you can match .338-06 velocities, and not too many will argue that cartridge isn't a good one.:)

It was proberly a flake powder, which has not been made available to handloaders!

Sorry for the delay guys....I can't get the hang of posting pictures, been trying for over two hours with no success.
Pictures of the rifle are on Ruger's web site and ammo on Hornady's...:(
