I'm going to be reloading and was wondering what would work best for my 338 win savage Alaskan. Shots no further then 300 yards. Not sure to go with a 225 grain or 250. I currently have rl19 as a powder and 225sst bullet.

i have a growing x bolt 338 win mag rl 19 is the best powder I've tried out of all I've tried I've tried 225 barnes tts and 225 noslser accubonds .Ive stayed with the noslers for the higher bc .but found really accurate loads with barnes ttsx with h4831sc at 74.5 and 76 grains

What velocities are you guys getting in 20" barrel? I always thought that if I go 20" in 338 for a short range it will be 338 Federal for much less recoil and blast...

Honestly I have no clue right now. I have been trying to find that info out. The only thing I have shot through it so far are federal fusion 225 grain.

Can't comment except to remind you that the powder that produces the most velocity in a 24" barrel will produce the most velocity in a 20".

I tried some 185 GMX in my 21" barrel with IMR 4895 highest velocity was 3085 fps best accuracy was at 2988 5 round avg.
2 1/2" high at 100 4" low at 300 yards, flat shooting round

300 yard target 1 flier (someday I'll get all 5 in the same place)

You will loose velocity with a shorter barrel. You don't want a tough bullet made to withstand high velocity at short range.

I have not done any research on this caliber, but off the top of my head, I would trust a Nosler Partition. I have found that the front section is fairly soft.
