ok im thinking about getting a 338 win mag for moose and blackbear maybe even the odd deer, but mostly for grizzly bear. just woundering what the prices are compared to say the 300 win mag.
thanks.

I buy the Winchester ballistic silver tip. $57 for 20 shots..... I don't usually bring this gun to the range for recreational shooting, so i don't really mind the cost. Have only gone out deer hunting once and didnt get anything so the ammo cost for this gun hasn't been an issue with me...yet.

Compared to what you will spend just on fuel for the hunt, any cost difference for ammo between .338 Win Mag and .300 Win Mag is completely insignificant.

If it was me hunting grizzly I would be carrying nothing smaller than a .338 Win Mag, it is a significant step up from the .300 in terms of power.

When I bought same brand, same bullet type, such as Winchester power point (obviously different bullet weights for each caliber) I found them to be 7-10 dollars more for the .338 in stores. Start loading your own. Get a cheap single stage press,(70-100 bucks) dies(45 bucks) , a reloading book (28),A pound of Reloader 22 or 25 powder (35 bucks), a box of 225gr or bigger bullets (40-60 bucks) a hundred primers.(4 bucks) and some case prep tools and hand primer (100 bucks) and you are in business. You'll never look back. You'll have custom ammo (in a combination that possibly is not available in stores) made for YOUR rifle, and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that the big pile of steaming brown fur you are standing over was felled by your own type of Axe!!

I seldom buy factory loads, but awhile back I did buy all a guy's premium .338ammo at a good price, mostly just to see if the TBBCs would show any potential in my barrel. $65 and $70 price tags plastered all over them.

Intrigued, I actually did check that out, and it was about the same locally. For what its worth, it turns out that its possible to use up a $50 bill on a box of 30-06. When did that happen?

If I were you, I'd be getting into handloading. Lead is a little more than the 30 cal stuff, but the rest is the same.

I'm still waiting for my .338s to start killing better than my .300s. I want them to, and have been encourageing and supportive, but I'm still seeing more difference between bullet types than the two cartridges.

I did use the .338 on my grizzly, and probably would again just on general principals. Hard to justify a .338 if you leave it home on a grizzly hunt.

Fair enough, but for grizzly I will take a 250gr @ 2700fps over a 180gr @ 3000fps. Maybe that is just me. A 30-06 will work just fine, too, if you always get a perfect shot.

YMMV.

I split the difference, and went with 225 TSXs at 2800 fps. I was looking for a compromise bullet for griz and goats on the same hunt, though the goat portion never came off. I did have 275 grain A-Frames on my belt that shoot to a 150 POI when the scope is zeroed for the TSXs at 200. One even got used as a finisher when the bear wouldn't quit squirming. There's a very noticeable difference between those two bullets in visual impact signs.

I'd like to crack a couple buffalo with the 275 A-Frames some day, just for couriousity.

I believe the .338 WM is legal for Buffalo in Namibia. IIRC Jim Carmichael has used it a fair bit, including on Cape Buffalo. I believe he used 250gr Partitions, but someone else will have to dredge up the old articles to confirm.
