338 win mag

I hand load it but before I started loading I bought the barnes 210gn vortex line for moose and never had an issue. Had great grouping and it was plenty powerful to knock down anything. I shot deer, moose and even a coyote with that load. Nothing ever ran too far after getting whacked by those copper pills.

Coyote was under 70 yards do that one was messy...

Thanks..... I just recently bought a nice winchester M70 .338wm from a fellow cgn'r

Normaly I would buy a bunch of different brands and see which groups the best but nowadays that is hard to do with the low availabilty and high cost of ammo.

So far I've only tried Nosler Trophy Grade 250gr Accubonds, they group good but they cost $119 per box here in town... ouch!

Also tried Winchester 200gr power points, they are cheaper to buy but the groups aren't really that good.. 2.5" at 100 yards.

So any info on 338 ammo I could get would really be appreciated.

My rifle is a Win Model 70, made in 1982. My current loading is from Nosler 9 manual - RL 19 at 74.0 grains (Max), 225 Accubond, Fed 215 primers, but I used W-W cases. I was shooting 3 shot groups to sight it in, after the pressure test series that started at 70.0 grains - was getting little triangles about 3/4" to the side on 100 yard target - was plenty good enough for me. It has an M8-6x scope on it. I did not shoot that loading over chronograph - expecting high 2,700's, maybe makes 2,800 fps - based on other loadings that I have done up in that rifle, comparing my chrony results to what the Nosler book says for velocity. When I first got that rifle in mid-1980's I fired factory Federal Premium ammo with 225 grain bullets - I think 3 boxes - have been hand loading for it since - Sierra 250, Nosler Partition 210, 250, Nosler Ballistic Tip 180 and 200. I settled on the above Accubond loading - good enough.

I use John Barsness loading of Varget and 250 Accubonds in the 9.3x62 - about covers what factory 338 Win Mag 250's can do - and have decent loads worked up with 286 grain Partition - "modern" 338 Win does not go up there, that I have found bullets for, around here. I have taken two elk with that 338 Win Mag, but is the only hunts that I have taken it on - we use 165 Speer HotCor in 308 Win, and 150 Partition in 7x57 for white tail and mule deer. My wife and son have also taken deer with 85 grain Speer in 243 Win, but is not used much these days.

I too just bought a Model 70 in 338wm, I grabbed two boxes of Winchester Power-Point 200gr and it shot under 1MOA. First time shooting the rifle. I’m very happy with it, even though I think the trigger is way to heavy. Il be working on some reloads over the next few weeks.

I shoot 210 partitions now and have used 200 ballistic tips. I would just use whatever shoots well I’m your rifle. A 338 WM is a lot of gun and Accubonds are a premium bullet. There’s nothing in NA it won’t level. Bullet choice shouldn’t be an issue.

I found a box of Winchester 200gr Ballistic Silver tips at a gas station of all places. lol

But now I found out that the silvertips are discontinued in .338wm.. :(
