338 Winchester - 250 grain Ammo

Listmates,

I am looking for some fast 250 grain factory ammo - any suggestions?

Hunting Big Bear at end of August :)

Ya, I would suggest you use the ammo that shoots best in YOUR rifle.
What works in someone elses rifle may just shoot terribly in your rifle, so guess what. There is no pat answer, other than going to the range and test driving a few brands. and by the way the paractice finding out what works will most likely be benificial to your shooting form and chances of anchoring that big ol bruin on the first shot.

Federal High Energy shot well in my 338, but that doesn't mean they will shoot well in yours. I don't see them listed on the Federal website, so they may not be available anymore.

The packaging claims a MV of 2800 fps for the High Energy ammunition, compared to 2660 fps for the other Federal 250 grain load. Honestly, I don't think Smokey will notice the difference; just hit him where it counts.

Try some Nozler partitions and if your gun dosen't like them sell the rest to me!!

Seriously though, like has been stated, it depends on your gun, any quality bonded core bullet should do the job if put in the right place.

I recently aquired a 338 win mag (remington 700). The fella I bought it off of is my ex's grandpa, so he included some ammo, along with the 250 grain high energy noslers from federal, however those rounds will be reserved for grizzly if I ever do get the draw.

What I am purchasing now (since I do not reload) is the 225 grain barnes-x, simply due to the lack of meat damage this bullet produces.

The federal ammo code for this cartridge is P338K.

There is still a 250 grain Nosler Partition available (though not high energy) the code for that one is P338B2. It has roughly 300 ft/lbs more energy at 500yds than the 225 barnes-x but at the 100 and 200 yd range the energy is only about 150ft/lbs more on the 225 grain barnes-x.

Hope this helps. :)

The Nosler Partition is not a bonded bullet...

In .338 mag any standard hunting 250gr bullet will perform just fine on moose and black bear, IMHO a bonded bullet is not required.

I realize this post is Re: Factory ammo, but one of the best aspects of reloading is that a person can buy whatever bullet turns their crank. If you want economy the 250gr Hornady Interlock cannot be beat. In the so-called premium bullets the first option is definitely the Nosler Partition, then the Speer Grand Slam, various iterations of the Barnes X... the Barnes TSX is supposed to be the ####zle.
I've never tried them but I believe the 250gr Sierra BT Gameking would be a fine moose and black bear round.
If money is no object then the Speer Trophy Bonded Bear Claw or the Swift A-Frame ought to make you happy.

Pretty much all of these bullets can be bought as factory loads from Remington; Federal; Hornady etc...
