I am looking to get into a long range rifle (1000+ yards). I'd like to build something .338LM and I see that with a McMillan A5 stock and a weatherby action, or a remington action, I may be able to save some money. Any opinions here on a best bang for your buck build? Budget of around $2500 (rifle only).

For that kind of money we can build a world class 338LM rifle, except for the barrel. It would be a bit over your budget but you would not be looking to upgrade down the road, no need! Before you go for a gun like that be sure you have a place to shoot it.

Obtunded, if you can get the extractor, Mick will be able to open it up for you. Very simple process. Now if you want an oversized bolt body, that would be a different story. Hard to imagine PTG wouldn't make a Lapua oversized bolt given the hysteria around this chambering.

Glo7, in case you haven't looked at the ballistics of smaller cals, it might surprise you at how far and how well these work. I have my own 338 Monster so don't me get wrong, been there, had one built. In fact, I have built LR boomers in every suitable cal from the 338 to 223.

I now spend alot more time shooting smaller cals just as far, just as accurately, and not much difference in wind drift.

Of course, if you are trying to lay a hurt on something, bigger better. If you are just LR plinking, the 338LM may just prove to be more fun then you bargained for.

And in the world of 338's, the LM is not the best option if downrange horsepower and performance is you goal...

there was a new (60 rnds through it) 338 LM in the FOR SALE forum a few days ago.. I think the fellow wanted $2250.00 with some ammo.. check there...

Jerry,

I'm not a fan of opening up Remington bolts and using Sako Extractors. Since Remmy uses a factory-opened long action Magnum bolt with an AR extractor for their factory 338LM, I wondered if Kiff would make one as well?

Well, if Dave doesn't, would be a pretty strong indication of what they think of the AR extractor mod.

I have heard enough for and against to wonder if it is a good mod.

For the simplicity and added performance of a 338 Edge or some other RUM variant, the Lapua would not be on my radar until it became a full on NATO cartridge causing all manner of new toys to be produced.

Also, availability of 1F brass for cheap....

By the way, my dist has just gotten some Hornady new 338 LM brass and it is well priced vs Lapua. Not sure how long it will last but it should be decent stuff.

As MP indicates the RUM variants are a far better idea on the Remington actions (or any other bolt that is the nominal Rem diameter).
