Hello Gents,

Tried looking for this but I couldn't get the results I was hoping for.

In a nutshell how does the cost of reloading 338LM stack up against the 50CAL?

I'm expecting the 50CAL to be about double but from all the chat around the 338LM it's hard to tell.

Has anyone reloaded both?

Thanks for your time, trouble and consideration.

Best regards,

Not sure, but I think that if you take the brass cost out of the equation it will still be 2-4 times as much for the 50 cal. Maybe even more?

I don't have many .50 BMG prices off hand but I've seen 1x fired IVI brass at a local shop for $3 each, and I would estimate $1.25 in powder, 60 cents for a primer, and match bullets can be $4-5 each. $9-10 per load.

338 LM around a $1 a bullet, $3 per new Lapua case, 4 cents for a large rifle/mag primer, 40-45 cents of powder for around $4.50-5.00 per load.

In comparison match .308 Win is still about $1 per load on new brass.

I think that may be a little high. They are selling brand new loaded ammo for less then $3 a round.

Look at the three costs to reloading (after initial purchase of brass)
There is powder, primer, and bullets.

50bmg, 338 lapua
powder(us869) 250gr. $1.07, powder(us869) 100gr $0.42
Primer each $0.60, primer each $0.045
Bullets each $4-5+ , bullets each $0.75-1 average.

So for reloading the 50 bmg your around $5.50-$6.50 per round,
and the .338 lapua your at about $1.50 per round.

Hi. You didn't indicate where you are located at. I am in Edmonton, and I have a press capable of reloading 20mm and higher. I plan to reload for 50BMG and 338, if enough people are interested in reloading with me. Not being Licenced, I can not manufacture and sell reloaded ammo, but you can sit down with me and my equipment and help me reload your rounds, especially putting your own powder in the Brass. I am especially intersted in helping 338 & 50BMG owners work up their loads to match Grade that suits each individual rifle. Is there anybody in Edmonton around Westview Mobile Home Park that is interested in working up their loads by reloading Match Grade Ammo for their Rifles, but don't want to invest the hundreds or thousands needed to reload these larger calibers? Of course, I have a smaller press for handling down to Pistol/Handgun rounds. Send me a PM if anyone is intested.

It depends for what purpose you are loading 50bmg, target or blasting. Bullets for blasting ammo cost about $1, Target bullets are $2.50 to $4 each.

I get primers for 45¢ each, match quality for 60¢

Powder is +/- $1, or $2 if you want to use VV powder.

Once fired cheap brass is $1, once fired target brass $2+, new brass $4+

So costs, including once fired brass, are from $3.50 to $7
