Hello!

This is an accurate load for my Savage 116FCSS 24" barrel
Will be my moose hunting load.

71gr. IMR 4350
Brass: Remington
Primer: CCI Large Rifle Magnum
Bullet: 225gr Hornady Interbond
C.O.L. 3.380
Muzzle vel.: 2970fps
Muzzle Ener.: 4406 ft/lbs
The velocity measurement is by chronograph.

You might be flirting with a bit of trouble there Alec... that velocity is really high for a 225 gr bullet in a 338 WM. The Hornady manual shows a max charge of 68.6 grs of IMR 4350 for that bullet.

Thats a bit fast for a .338WM with a 225gr. I'm running 225gr TSX with a near max load at 2750.

If it's an accurate load and there's no high pressure signs is that really that much of a problem? Some rifles can handle different loads then others even in the same make and model.

No sense in taking any chances though. Buy a .375 if you want those kinds of velocities. ;)
 
I have never seen a 225 out of a 338 go over the chronograph at that speed! That is in 340 wby territory.Pressure would be very high.I have used close to the same load @ 2790-2825 fps, I would check the chronograph.
 
I know it's fast for a 225gr in 338win but no signs of over pressure and my chrono said 2970fps... I tried some .22LR and the speed seems good.
I will go to the shooting range this weekend and if I can I will try to take some pictures of my cartridge once shot.

But is it dangerous if I do not have signs of over pressure. The bolt still easy to opened and the primer didn't show nothing more.

No matter the load, to get a 338 win to push a 225gr @ that velosity without about a 30" barrel, pressure would have to be very high.
 
Yes! You are probably in the 70,000 psi+ area, outside safe limits.
The fact that extraction seems OK is not a definitive enough sign that pressures are acceptable. Smooth chambers can "mask" extraction effort. I would measure the belt of that 338 case after shooting it, and compare it to a once fired factory round. If the expansion exceeds the factory example, I would most certainly back off. [You will need a vernier micrometer to take accurate measurements] Regards, Eagleye.
 
I have loaded 225gr NP's for years and my load is 67grs IMR-4350 and I get 2800fps MV.

I also use 67grs IMR-4350 with 250gr NP's, Speer GS or Hornady IL's. I get 2645fps MV with the heavier bullets.
 
Alec I took a look in my 48th edition of Lyman reloading tables and for the
338win mag max load for it with 225gr Jacketed soft point with IMR 4350 is 74gr at 2915 fps with a 1/10 twist and 24" barrel

Hodgdon says max load of imr 4350 is 72 gr which is a compressed load in 338win mag is and 225gr bullet at 2832 fps.
know in saying this don't be jumping at load of Lyman 74gr might have some severe problems ??
 
My most accurate load was 70 gr IMR 4350 and was getting nearly 2700 fps.
Noslers most accurate load was 72.5 gr of RE19. The most accurate load I had was 72.0 gr of IMR 4831. 2750 fps with a Nosler 250 partition and just over 4000 ft lbs. Under 2" at 200 yds. This is only a cold weather load as pressure signs show as soon at the temp exceeds 50 degrees F.
