Started reloading for my 350 Rem Mag last nite and it didn't take long to realize that the 250gr Hornady is WAAAY too long for a short 700 action....COAL of 3.150" touches the lands and I have to fit a 2.825"ish mag box.....so to fit the mag box I'm over .30" from the lands and the cannelure is inside the neck...not that I would have crimped them anyway...but it gives you an idea how deep the bullet was seated.

So...rather than wait until I get time to pick up bullets I thought..."what the heck".....

behold the Hornady 230 gr 35 caliber flat point...:)

2.855 COAL on the lands...that should fit the mag box at .03 off the lands just nicely

we'll see how they shoot...:)

I'll bet they shoot just fine. I have bubba'd the lead noses off with a pair side-cutters and the bullets would group just as well as the originals.

Yours are machined. They might shoot even better than the originals! :cool:

For Eastern whitetail the 200 gr Hornady are very effective - I have heard that is what the Remington factory loaded 200 gr uses however they "look" a little different to my eye.
The 225 Nosler Partition are impressive as well in as much as they don't even slow down on the way through a chest shot deer at 130(+/-) yds... frankly my experience with Noslers 35/225gr Partition is that it is a little too tough for soft skin game....I have not tried it on moose or elk though.

I haven't played around with the 250gr much but the velocities weren't too impressive.. I think the best balance would be 35 caliber at 2500fps for 3500lbft muzzle energy..if you can get there.
My 350RM Classic seems to take a slightly longer cartridge OAL than the 600/660/Model 7 actions fwiw..still not a 358Norma though..I do like this cartridge a LOT though:)

I've loaded for two different Rems and one Ruger in 350RM at 2.815" even and that is not unusual with many bullets - 250 spirepoints - Hornady and Speer HCs being an example.

The reamers used by the factories have been often long throated in 350RM for some reason (some older design RN heavy bullets with longer bearing surfaces eat up the throating space). But accuracy is usually still good I've found (note Weatherby's are accurate with the same condition exaggerated). The freebore often allows slightly more powder to be safely digested (if you can get it in) with improved velocity. I lightly taper/roll crimp the case mouth if the ogive is in the case mouth a little. If loaded over compressed load the bullet stays in place with neck tension and light crimp. So you don't need to machine off the nose I think.

That said...it's extremely cool what you have done there. Great modification - such precision. They look like possible 356Win lever candidates too. Also the "interlock" ring should remain intact and hopefully expansion will not be too slow. Your testing should tell. If you ever get to using either the 225 Btips or 225Accubonds get ready to machine off similarly some polycarbonate tip. Now those are looooong bullets for the 350RM.
