.35 Whelen and 200gr TTSX - looking for feedback

Probably helps to have a 28” barrel, I believe that’s the length of the T/C.

The Hornady Superformace 200gr ammo is advertised at 2910fps, I recall clocking it at an average of 2940fps out of a 24” barrel.

True, that is a long tube! i thought perhaps 24-26 at most, but that is alot of extra tube to speed things up a bit!

You can proberly pick up that Im once again lusting over my Whelen LOL- the circle of life.
but the bonus news on that is, im making a video to try explain, or show , how and why i get jacked up on different calibres, guns and methods all in the span of a week to a month LOL!

might make sense to you folks! lol-

ive got a bunch of the TSX 200gr loaded, ive not shot a deer with those and wont llikely load them again due to pricing down under. phenominal imo.

JMO, but the Whelen works just dandy with 250 SP C&C bullets, or at best, the 250 Partition... the 250 Partition is what I shoot from my No.1-A 22" Whelen, and also from my 22" M77 Mark II .350 Rem Mag... just about a perfect match for either... no problem getting them above 2450.

The Speer 250gr’s are excellent in my experience, both in accuracy and on game performance. Speer has a load on their website using CFE-223 powder, a 60gr charge nets me 2525fps with good consistent accuracy.

Used IMR 4320 with the 250 gr Hornady SP at 2500 fps.
Quick kills on many Elk and Moose over the years.

I bought two boxes of the 250gr Hot Cor bullets to stock up, chasing the same load with CFE223. Really something with the heavy bullets in .35 Whelen, they list 64.1gr max with the 250's for a velocity of 2664fps! That's a stomper!

Hi guys. I'm just in the process of having a .35 Whelen built because I fancy something a little different. I'm in the UK so not many around over here. At the moment I'm trying to figure out what bullet to use. Our deer are generally up to the size of whitetail, maybe a bit bigger. I also have boar locally which grow to about 250lb or so.

I'm thinking the 200gr TTSX could give me fairly decent trajectory and also penetrate fairly well? To shoot red deer in Scotland I need to make at least 2450fps, I need to make it out of a 22" barrel so maybe the 250gr cup and core bullets may be a little slow?

So I'm after your opinions please on what bullets I should be using? I'll probably come over to visit you guys again at some point too, so something that works for bears and maybe elk could be a consideration. Last time I came over I brought a .375H&H - most of the guys in your gun stores thought I was nuts but I was a little scared of the idea of meeting a bear! We don't have anything that can eat us here, an angry boar is about as dangerous as it gets.

I hunt with a 35 Whelen but primarily use the 225 grain Barnes. Easy to load that to 2500 FPS plus out of a 22 inch barrel. Kills wonderfully.

In regards to the Barnes 200 the TTSX, I use this in my 35 WSM and love it. I have it loaded to 3000fps and it is deadly. My last elk, mule deer, and bear have all been taken with this combo. I have yet to recover a bullet as they have all bee clean pass throughs. I would check out some of the new Speer reloading data out there for the 35 Whelen. Finally, a manufacturer is putting out proper load data for this wonderful cartridge.

Barnes has good load data as well but clearly you can see, you can easily meet your velocity requirements.

Good luck!

My 7600 carbine was chucking Federal Fusion 200 grains last week to get barrel break in and on paper at 2735 fps and fairly accurate as well. I have a few boxes of those Barnes TTSX 200 gr as well as some 225 gr Federal TBBC to try out before September.
