After picking up a nice Remington 700 CDL chambered in 35 Whelen from Mr Chola I decided to take it out and launch a few of those big 250 grain pills he sent me.:D
After getting it sighted and getting use to the trigger I put the last two rounds into 7/8ths of an inch at 100 yards.:dancingbanana:
The Talley rings and bases sit a little higher than other rings I have but they are a solid system and look nice on the CDL.:p
 
After finishing the bedding project on the Whelen I took it to the range and got two shots touching and one 3/4 inch off the first two. No more vertical stringing because of pressure points on the barrel. Free floating does wonders for accuracy.:D

My CDL is off for a tune-up right now. It is getting a set of Talleys and a VXIII 1.75x6.

I usually use 250 Speers, came into a bunch of 250 Hornadys this year, so I'll have to try them. Varget has worked well in the past with over 2500fps.

I kinda wish the CDLs were 22" instead of 24".

Easy enough to do with the right smith, I have a 22" on my "ultralight" (what else would you call a 6 3/4 lb Whelen??, other than a handfull!!) and sometimes think of going to a 20 or 19, for swinging room in bush. As for powders, Varget, BLC2, 4320, or 4064 should make that gal sing. I'll be testing some Barrnes 225gr Triple X this year to see how they shoot, but the grand daddy of Whelen bullets is that Speer 250. mrpike, who has shot more moose with that bullet than most of us will ever see, has used that bullet with 4320 powder for many years with great success.
 
So do you guys think the 250 grain Speer's are a good choice for elk? I just found out tonight that I have been given one of the local LEH tags for elk so its kind of a hunt of a life time:). I have 200 hundred 250 grain Speers at the moment but was really thinking a 225 grain Barnes TSX might be the ticket for this one! I have heard great things about the Speers out of the Whelen though!
 
I actually read that post last night about the 35 Whelen...

I figure since this is most likely a once in a life time hunt I am going to go with the best there is at the moment and that looks like the Barnes 225 TSX. I ordered a couple of box's and they where not cheap but I think they will give me that extra insurance on a big tough bull elk in tough terrain...
