I know RL15 is supposed to be the powder in the Whelen. I want to try H414 as it's a bit slower and I have lots of it on hand. I'm just curious if anybody has played with H414 and what kind of results they might have gotten?

Also would magnum rifle primers make any difference or just go with standard large rifle primers?

I've got 3 different bullets; 220gr Speer HC, 225gr Nosler Partitions and 250gr Hornady SP IL.
 
I haven't tried it in my Whelen so if you get yours up and running with H414 please post your results... I just looked in my manuals going back to 1967 and can't find any H414 data for the Whelen but see plenty of H414 data for the .338-06 which should work just dandy..
 
You can use up to a full case of H414 (stop at 66.0 grs for the 250gr which you're unlikely to reach anyways) in the 35 Whelen with any of those bullet weights.

I'd use mag primers in any load using ball powder.And almost all my other handloads use mag primers cause I hunt in cold weather...................Harold

Andy, is there any issue with underloading the cartridge? Since I didn't have any data, I threw 50grs into a few cases, under 250gr Hornady ILs, that I was gonna test fire-Chrony.
Other then I might be wasting my time...

You'll be ok. That's about an 80% load. Rather than shoot it though, I'd pull the bullets and try a few with between 55 and 60 grs.
 
A comparison load 4U;
Got a buddy that started at 52grs and worked up to 58grs max behind a 300gr BarnesO in his M673/350RemMag. That won't be too far off 35Whelen charges though I doubt you'll be using 300s. I checked his notes and it shot .9" for three holes at 100yds and was around 2250MV to 2300MV. He has always claimed H414 to be a great "heavy-for-calibre" powder in both the 350ReMag and 35Whelen and I believe him - though I've not used it myself yet.
