I want to build either a 350 Rem Mag or Norma Mag off a M700 action. All I can find is a 300 SAUM to donate it's action. What issues am I going to run into with this? The feeding lips for the mag well will likely need to adjusted right?
The SAUM action is too short for the 358 Norma Mag, you need a long action. You could do the 350 Rem Mag though. Bolt face is correct, you'll need another barrel, feeding may or may not be iffy, I would try it first before I started carving on things. FWIW - dan
and if the donar action will not feed, you won't be able to make it feed in my experience. It is not a matter of adjusting the lips on the box, Remington uses the bottom of the action and machines the rails differently. If they have removed the material for the SAUM to feed, you can't make it smaller for the .350 Mag.
I've built two 350 Mags on Remingtons that were factory SAUM's...mine is a short 700 and it feeds great and I'm sure I would have heard if the Model Seven had feeding problems...like Dan says...you need a long action for the 358 Norma....look for a 700 in 7mm Rem Mag(probably the most common), 300 Win Mag, 7mmSTW, 300 Wtby etc.
If you want power in a short action then a 350 WSM (35 Sambar) should work too - especially if the 300SAUM was chambered in the donor action I'm guessing. It's a wildcat off course - but one that chases on the heels of the power levels of the 358 NormaMag - in a short action. I just converted a Ruger77 in 350RemMag to this calibre. No issues.
