I haven't seen any postings in this regard. I'm looking at putting a 35 short mag of some sort together, a 350 rem mag is a easy choice, but somewhere in my memory challenged past I recall a 350 short mag floating around out there. Any one got some info or data on this? Better yet, a reamer? I have a magnum boltface 98 mauser action, and a barrel chambered to 358 win to fit said action. Already have a 358 on a Rem 600, sweet little critter it is, so the plan is to go up a bit, but I don't think I need a 358 Norma, so am looking at the shorter side of life.

Thoughts???

Having used all the factory 35s from 35 Rem to 358 Norma, I can tell you that the 350 Rem mag is not a big improvement over the 358 Win. It is right at the same power level as the 35 Whelen.

Since your action is a magnum bolt face Mauser, chamber it up to 358 Norma and never look back. You will be pleasantly surprised at the accuracy and effectiveness of th is great cartridge!

It's much safer to load a cartridge down than it is to lean on one to try and get it to do more than it should.

In a well stocked rifle, the Nine Norma is not a difficult rifle at all to shoot.

If you don't like it, you won't have any trouble selling it. Ever notice how few you see for sale............... and when you do hear about one and call, it's already sold!

I hunt with the 35 Rem/M600 Rem., 350 RM/M7MS Rem and a recent 358/M70 Win. I like all three of these for different reasons mostly because of the type of handy light short rifles they are chambered in and that's a big reason for owning them for me! In saying all of this I would agree with Why not?, get yourself a rifle chambered in 358 Norma. The 358 WSM will not work in your M98 unless you change your mag box for a wider box, it is the only way it will feed reliably. Try the "Short Mag Forum" I think they have some guys that were talking about having done this caliber already. It seems like a powerful round, but doing it on a long action is defeating the purpose of why the WSM"s were created, IMO.

Just a note for anyone interested - I necked up a spent 300WSM case to take a 358 bullet - essentially a 350WSM. I found it's case capacity to be 83 grains of water level to the case mouth. I made a dummy round by seating a Hornady 250RN on top and it was quite an impressive looking round to my eye anyway.

Here's a pic of the dummy round - http://35cal.com/350wsm.html

There is a shooting buddy/experimenter in my area building one now. He's reboring a Savage stainless/300WSM. I'll be watching that one with interest as I think it might be a good one.

Why would you go to a short round on a full length Mauser? I say Ted is a man with lots of experience with .358's, and would agree on the Norma. I would guess one could just run .338 WM through a full length .358 NM sizer and you'd be off to the races.

I have a 350 Rem Mag on a 98 action, and it equals the velocities of my 35 Whelen AI. Because you can seat the bullets out further, you gain a little case capacity. Typically you'll see 2600 fps plus with 250 gr bullets. I also have a 358 Norma, and it's a big step up in power (and recoil). - dan
