Hey Doc, I used to shoot a 357 Herrett in a TC for silhouette. The Herrett is shortened about 3/8" going from memory and is blown out a bit with a sharper shoulder. If it's a full length 30-30 case then it is the wildcat 35-30 which had some popularity a few years back, which is why Win came out with the 356 Win, and the 375 Win to replace the old 38-55 which was extremely favored in the eastern hardwoods country and lamented at length when Win ceased making ammo back in the 60s (I think). The good old boys didn't like the new fangled guns that used the 358 Win but wanted bigger bullets than the 30-30 / 32 Spl in the frame of the 94 Win, hence the relative popularity of the 35-30 in 94 carbines. It was a very popular rebore a few decades back for shot out 30-30s and 32 spls.

The 35-30/30 was one of the first wildcats dating back to around 1900 & it's purpose was to salvage worn out 32-40 as well as 32 win. special barrels. Paul Marquart buit a few 35-30's on Remmy 788 actions for silhouette rifles in the mid '70's that had a good reputation for accuracy & knockdown on rams.

I have a 1910 Winchester 94 in 32-40 that I'm looking into reboring & chambering to 35-30 to get the old girl back up to snuff.:)

Just to add, the Herret loading could launch 180 grainers to around 2100 fps. and the .35-30 can toss
300 gr. cast boolits at 1700 fps. or better in a strong action.

30 and 357 Herrett were the brain children of Bob Herrett, of Herrett stocks. I had a 10" 357 for a while. Nice gun, was designed for hunting big game, up here we used it for silhouette shooting back in the 70's and 80's. The shortened case worked more efficiently with the powders available at the time. I quite liked it, though it was a bit of a handful. Finally sold it to a bullet maker out Wetaskiwin way. - dan
